Getting to know Dr. Peter Lobl

Dr. Peter Lobl is a clinical psychologist in Midtown Manhattan with over 20 years of experience helping clients with their personal, relational, and work-related challenges. With doctoral training from Columbia University and supervisory clinical roles at Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Lobl integrates psychodynamic therapies and evidence-based modalities, such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), for an approach that is tailored to each client’s goals and life context. After his graduate studies, Dr. Lobl completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Addiction Institute of New York and then worked for six years as Supervising Psychologist at a specialized day treatment program. While maintaining his private practice, Dr. Lobl thereafter held academic positions as Assistant Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine and as faculty in the Harlem Residency in Family Medicine at The Institute for Family Health. Prior to entering the field of psychology, Dr. Lobl earned at JD from Duke University School of Law and practiced law as an Associate at international law firms. For his clients who are lawyers, Dr. Lobl provides individual and couple therapy that is informed by first-hand experience of “big law” cultures, including the pressures, intensity, and expectations of these legal environments.

What should a new client know about working with you?

The initial consultation has for purpose to get a chance to see if you find Dr. Lobl's approach to be a good fit and to discuss your goals for the therapy, including what you would consider a satisfactory outcome. During the consultation, you and Dr. Lobl would also go over some of your personal history as it relates to these goals. With individuals, Dr. Lobl initially focuses on clarifying the nature of the client's goals as those goals then inform and define the scope of the treatment. Clients sometimes come to therapy wanting to address something specific, such as self-assertiveness within professional settings, or something broader, such as general dissatisfaction with their life trajectory. With couples, Dr. Lobl uses EFT as a treatment modality; EFT's principal assumption is that partners want to feel emotionally connected but they also to protect themselves from emotional pain and vulnerability. This tension can lead to negative and recurrent patterns that the couple can find hard to break.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Once the client clarifies, with Dr. Lobl's assistance, a direction for the therapy, sessions typically involve gaining increased awareness about the kinds of situations the client finds challenging and learning new coping and interpersonal skills to better navigate these situations. For clients with broad concerns about their identity and their relationship patterns, sessions may be weighed towards reflecting on the client's perceptions of themselves and others; on observing some of the discrepancies between those perceptions and the choices they've made; and on working to align how they view themselves and how they function in the world. For couples, EFT sessions involves identifying and recognizing the relational patterns that bring both partners such distress and then learning in session how to communicate more effectively and how to interact in ways that promote connection and trust.
