Thank you for taking the time to review my webpage. I am Dr. Robert Carey, and I'd like to share a bit more about myself and the information you will find here. I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, licensed to practice in Pennsylvania since 2008 and in Florida since 2022. I earned my Bachelor's Degree (BA) in Psychology from Millersville University, Millersville, PA, in 1988, followed by a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology (MS) from Millersville University in 1998. I obtained my Doctorate of Clinical Psychology (PsyD) from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2006. Since then, I have attended numerous continuing education courses and seminars to stay current with the latest treatment trends in Clinical Psychology. I have worked in the mental health and intellectual disability fields since 1988, holding roles as a therapist, case manager, supervisor, manager, lecturer, and adjunct college professor. My experience spans inpatient and outpatient settings. For nearly 10 years, I owned and operated my private practice, New Day Psychological Services LLC, in Lancaster County. There, I specialized in testing and diagnostic services, primarily diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorders and Intellectual Disabilities. I also provided therapy and various assessments for children and adults, alongside the clinical staff I hired and supervised. In 2021, I relocated to Tampa, Florida. Since then, I have exclusively provided Telehealth services. This format meets a significant need, allowing many individuals to access care who otherwise might not be able to attend in-person appointments. I have adapted my treatments to be effective, safe, and secure within the telehealth setting.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I take a practical approach to treatment. After completing a thorough assessment with the client I work to establish individual goals with each client. This is a process that we work on together and agree upon. I largely work from a cognitive behavioral perspective meaning that the way that people feel and behave is directly related to the way they think about life and situations. Often our thinking is inaccurate and leads us to have negative, unpleasant feelings. In therapy we work to determine these types of thoughts and help the person to learn to correct these thoughts so that they are accurate which typically leads to feeling better and functioning better. My approach is also a teaching approach in that I consider it my job to teach clients what they need to know so that they can implement strategies ongoing to deal with their problems and difficulties on their own. My personality is calm, empathetic and warm. I strive to meet each person exactly where they are and there is no judgement of any kind. I seek to make each person feel comfortable and to move at the pace that best meets their needs.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session we have will be an assessment session, meaning that I will ask you lots of questions about what is troubling you as well as ask about historical information. This process is essential as it helps me to understand your personal, individualized difficulties. The next step in the process is to set up treatment goals. These keep us on track and provide us with a roadmap to your treatment so we both know where we are heading. This is completed together and we both agree on these goals. Therapy sessions are somewhat structured in nature in that we often will take a look at the difficulties experienced in the past week and see how we can apply what you are learning in therapy to address these issues. Each session will include some further teaching of skills to enable the client to eventually not need therapy any longer- which is the ultimate goal! However, structure is not so strict that we can't be flexible. If a client has specific things going on that week that really need to be the focus of the entire session, then that is what we do. I am flexible in approach as well. While I largely use a cognitive approach , I will also use other methods if that is what the client needs. It is all about being individualized so that each person is provided with the service that is going to help them to get better.
