“When I first met with Bob I was three years sober but had no tools for dealing with my emotions or navigating life. He was a patient listener and an articulate guide on my emotional growth journey. He was a practiced active listener. He earned my trust by consistently calling back details from previous sessions, sometimes from quite a while back, and helping me to make connections to my current situation. He was direct and clear, unafraid to say challenging things that pushed me. I never felt coddled but I also never felt judged. He was encouraging and positive but never in an artificial or patronizing way. I left every session with at least one thing to chew on and wrestle with for the next week. Bob taught me practical skills to deal with complicated and overwhelming emotions on a day to to day basis. He also worked to help me mature emotionally past the adolescent place where I had stalled because of alcohol abuse. He created a space where I felt free to be honest, and that promoted growth. I moved across the country so our sessions stopped. Although that made me kind of sad I'm grateful that he helped me acquire tools and skills so I can thrive emotionally even though I'm currently without a therapist. I will be grateful to Bob forever and can't recommend him highly enough.”

Getting to know Robert Montero

I am only conducting virtual appointments. I will need to have a consultation call prior to our first session. Additionally, I will send you a few documents to review, as well as a link to upload your basic contact information and credit card into my system. If you have Blue Cross Blue Shield, I will need a copy of the card, front and back, in order to confirm whether I can accept your particular plan. Please note I cannot accept Medicaid insurance. Chronic stress creates a strain that calls upon the system to devise coping strategies to survive. These strategies, especially the ones we adopt instinctively in childhood, are the source of behaviors that create problems in our lives. It can manifest as varying degrees of anxiety and depression; we get stuck—in relationships, careers, or our ambitions. We get stigmatized by what we feel, which just adds to the bad feeling. I don’t like to label someone with a diagnosis. I prefer a holistic approach. Ultimately, the system wants to heal itself, and it is my goal to help clients realize their innate perfection. In a safe and non-judgmental environment, I help clients recognize the behavioral patterns that create obstacles in their life experience. I use a multi-modal approach including EMDR and Internal Family Systems, based in mindfulness and compassion, to help clients find adaptive solutions that help them discover the life they want to live and the values they want to live by. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from New York University, which informs my compassionate and evidence-based approach to therapy.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am sensitive to how difficult it can be to start therapy and trust your personal issues with a stranger. It is my mission to make you feel safe, to meet you where you are in life, and provide a totally judgment-free environment. You are the expert at being you and I will always honor your individuality and right to choose. We will work together to help you heal what needs to be healed, to make sense of what doesn't make sense, and to find your way to living the life you feel is worth living. What is your typical process for working with clients?

I am happy to say i don't have a "typical" process for working with clients. Everyone is totally unique and deserves a unique and fresh perspective. There is an expression that says 'if the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail." That is exactly what I strive NOT to do. I have spent my life dedicated to self-study and am avidly working to learn new modalities, not only for my clients but to apply to my life as well. Additionally, I call upon my life experience. Prior to becoming a therapist, I worked in music production as a business owner and bring a business and creative understanding to all my sessions. I take a roll-up-the-sleeves approach to help you realize what isn’t working for you and how to replace it with something that does.
