Getting to know Russell (Tony) Martin

PLEASE NOTE: CIGNA INSURANCE IS ACCEPTED ONLY FOR TELEHEALTH APPOINTMENTS My name is Tony Martin, and I am a psychotherapist in private practice with an office in lower Manhattan. I also offer Telehealth sessions for New York and Connecticut residents. People often come to therapy feeling that they need to fix or change some troubling aspect of themselves. What can be surprising, however, is that the therapeutic process often begins as a journey of self-acceptance rather than fixing or changing. Most of us have not been fortunate enough to have people in our lives who can listen without judgment or agenda. That is my job as your therapist. By truly listening, I will learn what the world looks like through your eyes, and this intimate understanding of your inner world will help me guide you through the challenging journey of self-acceptance as the gateway to personal transformation. When we feel seen, heard, and understood by another person, our defensiveness decreases, our self-acceptance increases, and lasting change can be achieved. While I work effectively with a broad range of clients, I have found that I am particularly adept at helping clients navigate anxiety and its myriad manifestations; recover from childhood abuse or neglect; change harmful relationship and communication patterns, including through couples counseling; manage and reduce the stresses resulting from manic, hysterical, or borderline personality traits; recover from addiction; and increase self-efficacy and self-respect. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Georgia and a Bachelor’s degree from Minnesota State University Moorhead. Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, I worked for 25 years in the nonprofit and for-profit sectors as an administrative, fundraising, and human resources professional. I also work as an Interfaith and Interspiritual educator.

Very good experience. Will definitely coming back soon!
I was surprised provider was quick to jump to conclusions in first session without having more context, and that wasn't necessarily constructive.

I was truly impressed with how comfortable Tony made me feel. It became increasingly apparent that he was genuinely interested in how I was experiencing my life. He continues to push me to explore how I am thinking about my experiences and challenges me to acknowledge the limitations I put on myself. Sessions with Tony have been invaluable in getting me to see my own codependent behaviors while also helping me see the areas where I wrongly accept responsibility. I'll continue seeing Tony and can easily recommend him to others.
Tony is a wonderful therapist. I've had several over the years and I have felt most comfortable w/him. He's present, empathic, gentle, smart, accepting, funny and honest. As a result of our work together I have more compassion for myself and feel freer in the world.
Psychotherapy is a deeply personal experience and requires a unique relationship with a practitioner different from that of a medical doctor. Entrusting ones emotional and at times spiritual well-being to the confidentw guidance of another human being demands a certain kind of love without which there can be no trust. I can say unequicically that Mr. Martin is governed by love and directs his sessions with delicacy, humility and grace in service to the specific needs of his client. I find my work with him invaluable at a very difficult time in my life and consider him as my therapist nothing less than a godsend. I highly recommend him.
Tony is a warm and caring therapist. He was always attentive to my needs and allowed me to come to my answers in my time, always with grace and compassion. He was very helpful to me and I feel grateful to have been helped by him.
Tony is an intuitive counselor who is adept at seeing patterns and hearing not only what is said, but what is not said. He skillfully validated my feelings, affirmed my strengths, and modeled compassion. He is able to bring attention to areas of growth in a way that promotes change without triggering guilt. And when I was crying and needed a hand to hold, he offered his. Thank you, Tony.
