Getting to know Sarah Kaufman

I’m a New York–based therapist working with couples and adult individuals. I welcome people of all identities, orientations, and life experiences, with a particular passion for supporting LGBTQ+ clients, new parents, and those navigating recent loss. My areas of focus include sex and relationships, grief and loss, perinatal and reproductive mental health, and relational trauma. I regularly work with couples and relationships exploring or practicing ethical non-monogamy. My approach is relational and grounded in psychodynamic therapy, looking at how past experiences may be shaping your present. I also incorporate Internal Family Systems (IFS), or “parts work,” to help us understand the different parts of you and how they interact. When working with couples and relationships, I use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). I love EFT because it helps shift the focus away from blame and toward the patterns between or among partners—the emotional cycles that can feel impossible to escape or resolve. I earned my Master of Social Work from NYU and completed my fieldwork at GMHC (formerly Gay Men’s Health Crisis), where I worked with LGBTQ+ individuals living with HIV. Before becoming a therapist, I earned a master’s degree in journalism from NYU and spent over a decade working in brand marketing for financial technology startups. I often draw on this background when working with clients in corporate or high-pressure professional environments.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I tend to be conversational, collaborative, and engaged during sessions, encouraging open dialogue that fosters honest sharing. I also value feedback and regularly check in because I find that it deepens our work together. My goal is to support you on your unique journey of personal growth and self-discovery, and I am dedicated to providing client-centered, anti-oppressive care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We start by scheduling a free 20-minute consultation call to discuss what you're looking for in therapy and how I can support. We'll also use that time to discuss fees, availability, and scheduling. From there, we'll schedule an intake session where I can learn more about you. After three sessions, we can check in to see how you're feeling about our work together and whether you'd like to continue.
