Getting to know Dr. Shelly Scamardo

Psychology has been a passion of mine since high school when I took my first psychology class. I attended college at Michigan State University and graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor's degree in psychology. After moving to Chicago, I received my Master's degree in clinical psychology from The Illinois School of Professional Psychology (ISPP). I continued on to receive my doctorate in clinical psychology with a major in child and adolescent psychology. The majority of my training during graduate school and professional experience since has focused on clients with severe mental illness and psychological disorders that required a higher level of care, such as inpatient hospitalization, therapeutic day treatment and residential care. Through these experiences I have gained a deep appreciation for the difficulties clients face in the treatment and recovery from mental illness and the incredible impact it has on the family. I chose to begin a local private practice so that I can focus my efforts on the prevention of severe mental illness, intervening with kids and teens earlier, to prevent the need for extensive treatment. I work to identify areas of concern, create a treatment plan and quickly reduce symptoms. In meeting clients where they are in their journey, I am able to partner with them to help them reach their full potential. When I am not in the office, I am with my son and daughter as much as possible. You might even see me in the area running with a cello or flute, looking too busy to talk; just know that I am protecting your privacy by not approaching you, but I will definitely stop for a quick hello if you address me!
