Getting to know Dr. Stacy Bemis

Stacy Bemis, PsyD, is a licensed clinical psychologist offering teletherapy to residents of California. She earned her PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Alliant International University and holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Southern California. She also completed a fellowship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Bemis currently provides services to adults aged 18 to 64 who are struggling with various concerns, including daily stressors, life transitions, relationship issues, depression, anxiety, emotion dysregulation, trauma, and serious mental illness. Dr. Bemis has extensive experience delivering evidence-based treatments and integrates cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills training, and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). These approaches emphasize being attuned to the present moment through mindfulness, embracing or accepting internal experiences, and committing to value-driven goals that can create a meaningful life worth living. Additionally, Dr. Bemis implements Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and CBT for Psychosis (CBTp) for schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. She believes that everyone has the potential for change and growth, dependent on the effort they invest. Dr. Bemis encourages clients to take an active role in therapy while recognizing that discussing sensitive matters with a stranger can be daunting. Therefore, she fosters a warm, non-judgmental, and culturally responsive environment that builds trust, allowing clients to express their vulnerabilities safely and without fear of judgment or ridicule. Furthermore, she strives to empower clients on their therapeutic journey by providing tools and strategies that help address barriers to living a fulfilling and present life. Dr. Bemis collaborates with you as a team to ensure that both of you are aligned and that each effort is a step toward transformative healing.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As an Asian-American woman, Dr. Bemis recognizes the impact of filial piety, gender roles and expectations, and the challenges of balancing bicultural norms and values. She approaches her clients with cultural awareness and sensitivity, considering their individual needs while honoring their cultural beliefs. She validates her clients' emotions while gently encouraging them to explore alternative perspectives. Her therapeutic approach is egalitarian, emphasizing the significance of a collaborative client-therapist alliance. She appreciates constructive feedback, as building a genuine and authentic therapeutic relationship cultivates trust and provides opportunities for learning and growth.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Before the initial Intake/Psychiatric Evaluation, clients will be asked to complete a few questionnaires. The purpose of these screeners is to establish a baseline of your current functioning. Dr. Bemis will review the results with you during your Intake session. In the Intake session, Dr. Bemis will gather additional information about you, your presenting concerns, and your background history. Subsequent sessions are structured by collaboratively setting an agenda with the client, prioritizing topics, assessing and tracking mood, reviewing homework if any was assigned, explaining the agreed-upon homework assignments for the next session, and gathering feedback from the client about their experience in the session.

Dr. Bemis is amazing. I remember feeling nervous to start therapy because it was my first time, but I felt comfortable with Dr. Bemis because she was so friendly and transparent about what I can expect. I still use the tools she taught me til this day which has improved my overall life tremendously.

Dr. Bemis is patient, thoughtful and offers valuable resources during our appointments. After trialing another therapist, I was looking for a provider who could extend beyond simply listening to my problems and could offer scientific explanations as to why I’m feeling or perceiving certain thoughts and emotions. Instead of just telling me to stop or start doing something, Dr. Bemis offers techniques and resources to facilitate desired behaviors in a way that is both directly applicable and engaging. Dr. Bemis is wonderful and I look forward to continue working with her.
She was very easy to talk and open up to, I felt very comfortable discussing matters that were personal to me. I never feel pressured, rushed, or anything else when I take our discussions in an unexpected direction.
