Dr. Stephanie (Steph) Rothman, PhD

Dr. Stephanie (Steph) Rothman, PhD

Psychologist
318 Western Ave., Petaluma, CA
I specialize in complex trauma and stuck patterns—strategies that we cling to because they feel protective and essential to our success, even though they're also limiting. These patterns can show up as worrying, rumination, obsessing, avoidance, numbing, shutdown, people-pleasing, raging, perfectionism, addiction, suicidal thoughts, etc. I have particular passion for collaborating with clients with intense personalities and, accordingly, I also work with couples in high-conflict dynamics. In therapy, we get at what’s driving these patterns, shift the shame, and explore more fulfilling ways of relating to the experience of life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I will be direct with you without being directive. While I bring expertise in mental health in general, you are the expert on you: your process is boss. I integrate relational and cognitive-behavioral modalities in a collaborative way. We'll explore how you relate to yourself and the world, aiming for effectiveness and meaning.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I prioritize authentic human-to-human connection because that’s where the value of therapy emerges. I inquire and listen closely to fully understand the depth, scope, and detail of what you're experiencing before I start throwing googleable solutions at you. (Just kidding—I won’t throw things.)
