Getting to know Dr. Stephen Buglione

Dr. Buglione graduated from Dartmouth College and earned his Ph.D. from Fordham University's graduate training program in clinical psychology, accredited by the American Psychological Association. He has been in independent clinical practice for over 30 years and is a member in good standing with the American Psychological Association, New York State Psychological Association, and American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. He is fully certified and licensed to practice in the State of New York. His continuing education credits include a post-graduate certificate in marriage and family psychotherapy through the Family Institute of Westchester, accredited by the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. His special interests are couples' interaction patterns and trans-generational family dynamics. He also has had extensive training and continuing education in the use of psychological, educational, and neuropsychological tests in evaluating a wide range of diagnostic questions. Dr. Buglione has held adjunct faculty appointments at New York Medical College and St. Joseph's Seminary in New York. As an adjunct professor of psychology at Fordham University from 2005-2010 he taught university courses in Family Psychology, Multicultural Issues in Psychology, Psychology of Aging, and Research Methods in Psychology. In his career, Dr. Buglione has worked in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings with both children and adult clients, where he was responsible for supervising the clinical work of junior staff members towards the state licensure requirement.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a trained marriage and family therapist, I specialize in the counseling and treatment of distressed couples and families. With a special interest in family dynamics and couples' interaction patterns, I have expertise in helping couples to identify and overcome barriers to closeness and communication as may be affecting their ability to meet normative challenges of family life. I have experience helping couples recover from extramarital affairs, manage emotional or behavioral difficulties of children, negotiate divorce, remarriage and step-family adjustment issues, and cope with non-normative and more highly stressful life events, e.g., death of a child, chronic illness, etc.. Often, a crisis within a relationship--even something as serious as an extramarital affair--can be an opportunity for eventual development of deeper and happier commitments.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The therapist-client relationship is the foundation on which the work of counseling and psychotherapy builds. Studies have shown that therapist qualities such as warmth, ability to empathize, and dedication to the client's welfare contribute significantly to a successful outcome in psychotherapy. The client should feel comfortable in the therapist's care. Therapist and client should be able to work as a team to understand and resolve the client's difficulties. Clients can expect that Dr. Buglione will offer new perspectives on problems and communicate psychological understanding appropriate to the situation at hand. New perspectives frequently suggest new solutions. Regarding couples and family problems, my focus is primarily on the relationship, not so much on particular individuals. Even though members might be very angry with each other, blame is counterproductive. Usually, it is the reciprocal interaction patterns that need to change, which is the responsibility of each member of the couple or each member of the family system. At the start of marital or family therapy it is common for participants to focus on the behavior of their partner, or of someone else in the family system, as the source of all problems; however, couples and family problems seldom have a simple linear explanation. Often, family members get caught in circular patterns of interacting that act like quicksand to get them more and more stuck. Once two people begin to see the reciprocal nature of their interactions, however, they can let go of some of the emotion and start to work together on constructive changes.
