Hi there, I'm Sumathy! Hello! My name is Sumathy Karuppannan Applewhite, LCSW. I am a South Indian and Caucasian cis-gendered woman interested in creating coping strategies and joy to combat anxiety, PTSD, and depression that can be associated with holding intersecting identities (racial, ethnic, sexual, gender, etc.). I earned my Master's in Social Work from Columbia University, which has deeply informed my approach to therapy. My approach My approach is collaborative, client-centered therapy. Every person comes with their own unique life experiences and perspectives, which we will explore together to gain clarity and focus on how to be the best version of ourselves. My focus I typically work with BIPOC, including mixed-race individuals who may or may not identify as LGBTQIA+. We work through navigating our intersecting identities and explore how to be authentically ourselves, beyond the labels. My communication style I am a very open-minded, warm individual who occasionally uses humor to help alleviate the stress of processing our intersecting identities. My journey to mental healthcare I want to be the person I didn't have when navigating these issues. My goals for you I explore what has brought you to therapy and how I can help get you to where you want to be, at a pace that feels comfortable for you. My first session with you It should feel like a casual conversation and less like an interview. I firmly believe in meeting the client where they are. We will start with whatever you would like, and I will guide you from there with curiosity and genuine interest.
