Dr. Susan Nastase, PsyD

Psychologist
HI
Hi there, I'm Susan! My name is Susan L. Nastase, and I am a Psychologist with a PsyD from the Hawaii School of Professional Psychology. My approach to therapy is both supportive and educational. Often, individuals seeking care want and deserve the supportive environment of therapy. I believe these individuals also benefit from learning more about their symptoms, identifying patterns, and building healthy skills. My approach My initial approach typically emphasizes therapeutic rapport, often seen with patient-centered approaches. Once rapport and trust are established, I tend to use a cognitive behavioral approach. Cognitive behavioral approaches help individuals during sessions, but also in between sessions. My focus I have worked with a wide range of clients, including those experiencing symptoms associated with severe mental illness, anxiety and depression, trauma, and substance use. My communication style I tend to prefer direct, clear, and kind communication. I do not use verbiage that could be confusing or intimidating—it is just not my style. I link the client's verbiage with psychological terms as a means of helping clients understand their symptoms and possibly diagnosis. My journey to mental healthcare I have always been in "helping" careers. First, I was in the medical field and then transitioned into the mental health field. Therapy and being a psychologist have always felt natural to me. My goals for you Goal setting is truly collaborative and done during the first session. This enables therapy sessions to focus on the areas most important to clients. Goals are often revisited and adjusted when needed. Goals are not meant to be rigid guidelines during sessions, but rather gentle reminders of the client's needs. This helps therapy bring about healthy change.
