What should a new client know about working with you?

If you found me, this is likely your first time coming to therapy or this is your first time working with a therapist who looks like you. This might be your first time questioning the cultural narratives you've been told and unpacking the guilt and shame that come with them. You might feel like you're doing something "wrong". I want you to know you've come to the right place. I'm an EMDR-certified therapist who predominantly works with women from culturally or religiously conservative households who struggle with feeling too much and not enough at the same time. Perhaps you've been told directly or indirectly that you're either "too Brown", or "not Brown enough", or even "whitewashed". I don't shy away from talking about how culture, intergenerational trauma, and current events impact your mental health. If the state of the world is impacting your outlook on life, let's talk about it! My approach starts out gentle, warm, and patient. At the same time, I am no-BS and no-frills, and I like to bring my authentic self into the room. Over time, our work together starts to become more direct and lively as we get to know each other better! I like to weave in sarcasm and humor into our work together. I balance being light-hearted while carrying the heaviness of your pain with you. Therapy is hard work, but it doesn't mean it can't be fun!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Therapy is a slow burn that is all about right time, right place, and right therapist. Trust is crucial to me, especially if you come from a community that stigmatizes therapy, so we'll take time to get to know each other before diving in to the heart of the work. Once we've developed a trusting relationship, we'll start talking about your goals, what you've tried, and what you're willing to do differently. We'll name the things you've been taught to suppress due to religion, culture, abuse, or family expectations. Over time, we'll start to develop grounding tools to process trauma with EMDR or other techniques. Therapy is about gently confronting rather than avoiding the things that scare you. I won't make you jump into the deep end of the pool right away. But we can gradually swim our way there, and I'll be in the trenches with you! If you feel overwhelmed, we'll break things down into smaller steps. We'll challenge self-defeating beliefs that get in your own way. The more you run away from the things that scare you, the scarier they become. But over time during our work together, you'll realize the monster has no teeth. Studies show that people who come to therapy consistently and frequently experience a significant reduction in depression. In order to solidify your coping skills, newly learned techniques, and progress towards goals, I ask that we meet weekly in the beginning to ensure you're on the right track. Once you feel like you're in a more stable place, we'll go over your progress, discuss new goals if there are any, and then reduce the cadence of our sessions if needed. Therapy isn't about being a hammer looking for nails, but I like to leave no stone unturned. And when you graduate from therapy, it's never a good-bye, it's "See you later"! My door is always open if you decide to return. It feels good to know that you always have someone you can turn to.
