Getting to know Dr. Tricia Shihui Wang

Pronouns: They/Them Hello! I provide open-ended psychotherapy to adults of all ages with a wide range of concerns. Whether you are navigating the profound challenges of depression, anxiety, and the long-term effects of childhood (and adult) trauma, or managing the everyday struggles of work, relationships, and life transitions, I offer a safe, compassionate, and non-judgmental space where you can feel at home and supported in exploring what is most on your mind. I am welcoming of people of all backgrounds and identities, and deeply committed to working with individuals from diverse and marginalized communities, including BIPOC, queer, and immigrant populations. With 12+ years of experience, my approach is rooted in psychodynamic & psychoanalytic therapies. I believe in the profound capacity of relationships to heal, transform, and support meaningful growth. I also integrate systemic understandings of how we are shaped by the political, socio-cultural, gender/sexuality, and racial systems in which we live. I am collaborative, straightforward, and down-to-earth in my approach, relying on your guidance to inform how I can best support you. Together, we will work to understand troubling patterns and foster emotional growth. I hold a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Duquesne University and an M.Phil.Ed from the University of Pennsylvania. I look forward to hearing from you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My therapy style is grounded, collaborative, and inclusive. I aim to help you cultivate resilience, deepen self-understanding, and empower emotional growth with authenticity and agency. This means my approach is dynamic: At times I may listen fairly quietly, while at other times, I am more interactive, responding emotionally, or challenging you in ways that encourage your growth. We will address what feels most pressing to you – and I will help you attend to that most on your mind (even celebratory ones)! Together, we will explore your relationships - to yourself, to others, and to the world, your stories and experiences, and the institutions & systems in which you live. I am committed to being transparent and responsive to your needs and goals for treatment, both of which may evolve as we work together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Foremost we start by my working to establish a safe relationship with you, so that you feel comfortable and supported in expressing yourself to me. We will explore and collaborate on what feels most pressing to you. This process is ongoing - I will listen carefully to your concerns as they may evolve and change over time - and we will continually decide how best to address issues that emerge. Our work will fluctuate between exploring the past and addressing the 'here and now' of current challenges, conflicts, and emotional reactions. At times, we may explore what emerges in our own therapeutic relationship. In so doing, we may begin to look at previously adaptive ways-of-being which are now getting in the way of a richer, more enjoyable life. My goal is to help you to move through the world with greater equanimity, creativity, agency, effectiveness and even joy - in both love and work. As your therapist, I encourage and am open to your feedback about how our relationship and work is going; it is an essential part of the process. Because our process takes place via a secure video platform, I prioritize creating a digital space that feels just as focused and connected as an in-person office.
