Getting to know Wilma Torres

Disclaimer: Providers at Canino Psychotherapy focus on therapy services and do not prescribe medication, as they are not psychiatrists. I am a bilingual and bicultural Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master's in Social Work from Fordham University and a Bachelor's degree from Hunter College, City University of New York. When working with a client, my primary focus is to create a safe environment where clients can explore their life history and experiences. Ultimately, it is important that my clients achieve their treatment and life goals. To accomplish this, I use a client-centered and strength-based approach. I have successfully worked with adults, adolescents, the elderly, families, and couples. My integrative approach to treatment includes cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, psychoeducation, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness techniques.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In a therapeutic relationship, clients are the experts. I work in collaboration with my clients on specific issues they identify. I have a discussion in the very first session about what my clients are looking for, what has worked (or not worked) in the past, and how can I be of assistance. I bring a client-centered, solution-focused, and strength-based approach to treatment. *Please kindly note that we do not provide psychiatry services (medication) and are unable to accept Medicaid insurance plans at this time.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In the first session, we discuss the reason the client is looking for services. The client will tell his/her story. We then explore what has worked (or not) in the past and how I can help. During subsequent sessions, I check in with the client to review the week and then we collaboratively work on and discuss any presenting issues and some approaches.

This was my first time seeing a therapist and Wilma was a great fit for us. She is a great listener, communicator, and broke things down very easily for us. I addressed two main issues and she came up with strategies for me to work on. I’m very hopeful and think everything will be ok. Thank you Wilma for making me feel comfortable and making it feel like a safe space for me ????

Wilma is so patient, kind, and calm. She really listens without judgement, asks great questions, and offers really good ideas.

I met Wilma a few years ago when I was going through a difficult divorce. This was a time of very sad and intense emotions that deeply affected my children. Wilma helped me deal with the loss and other emotions related to the divorce. She helped me learn effective ways of communicating with my children so that they could express their concerns. Wilma was very professional, patient, and caring. She had excellent clinical skills as well as cultural competence; often times sessions were held in Spanish, which is my primary language. She truly helped me get through a very difficult time in my life.
From day one I felt very comfortable with her. Wilma makes the person feel very comfortable and safe. She helped me to be emotionally and mentally well when I was going through the process of being separated from my boyfriend of 10 years. She listened to me. She reminded me that I am a human being full of feelings and that it is okay to express and live them. But she also challenged me with questions like, what would life be like now? positive & negative of getting out of comfort zone.
My visits with Wilma are extremely helpful and insightful. I always feel heard and understood. She always creates an atmosphere that feels safe and without judgment. I have made lots of progress through multiple circumstances that life tends to throw my way and I can say with conviction that Wilma has been instrumental in my personal success.
