Who is a psychologist?

There is an ever-growing awareness of mental health's importance to personal well-being, and psychologists are crucial in this process. Psychologists are healthcare professionals who help patients battle mental health challenges, increasing their overall well-being. They help treat various mental health disorders, ranging from mundane to severe, and assist patients in rehabilitation from traumatic incidents.

Role of a psychologist

Psychologists can help patients deal with depression, anxiety, and anger. They can also help with chronic or long-term illnesses such as dementia that can cause severe stress and impact your mental and physical health. They attend to short-term issues such as stress caused by a change of employment, grief due to the death of a family member, or even personal relationship problems such as divorce or break-ups. They can also assist a person struggling with addiction.

Psychologists help address behavioral problems, healthier lifestyles, weight issues, and sleep disorders. Their treatment style varies to address specific concerns and fit the patient's personality and characteristics. They use one or a combination of therapy techniques, such as interpersonal, cognitive-behavioral, humanistic, and psychodynamic therapies.

Psychological assessments and tests can also diagnose personality functioning to help individuals reach their full potential. If you or your loved one is preparing for standardized tests (such as SAT, MCAT, or LSAT), or if your scores are lower than your expected potential, a psychologist can arrive at the root of the issue. They can assess if someone has a learning disability like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and build a comprehensive treatment plan to combat it. They may also recommend educational accommodations that the child needs, such as more time on tests, tutoring, or a separate room for testing.

Difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist

It is natural to be conflicted when deciding if you need a psychologist or a psychiatrist without knowing the difference between them. The fundamental difference between psychologists and psychiatrists is that the latter can prescribe medications. Psychiatrists usually deal with more complicated disorders such as schizophrenia, psychosis, etc. On the other hand, psychologists use psychotherapy and other techniques to deal with more common conditions such as learning difficulties, depression, behavioral problems, anxiety, addiction, etc. A psychologist can diagnose and then consult with a psychiatrist, general physician, or pediatrician if a patient needs to be prescribed medication.

Impact of COVID-19 on mental health

With the unanticipated impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, psychology was one of the medical fields that felt its effects in various ways. With in-person appointments and therapy sessions no longer possible due to lockdowns, psychologists quickly adapted to telehealth and found imaginative ways to stay connected with patients' needs.

Furthermore, while remote work is helpful in many ways, it does bring about its challenges. People find that the disappearance of a clear divide between their work and home environment leads to new mental health concerns. The challenges children with learning difficulties face in a completely new virtual learning environment are also significant.

Lockdowns also hindered people's physical activity and nutrition habits, affecting their overall psychological well-being. Psychologists increasingly point to healthy dietary practices as fundamental to physical and mental health.

Why should you see a psychologist?

People have various experiences during their lives that can affect their mentality. A few experiences can cause extreme stress or even disrupt daily activities. As a result, it can impact people’s quality of life and cause them to become unproductive. Hence, indulging in therapy sessions with a psychologist can help people gain mental clarity.

Here are a few reasons why people can consult a psychologist near them:

  • A prolonged state of helplessness - People who feel stressed, anxious, or depressed for a long time feel helpless, leading to social isolation. It can affect their willingness to work, socialize, or even indulge in productive activities.
  • Death of a loved one - Losing a close friend, family member, or a loved one can affect one’s mental state. People have different ways of dealing with grief, but it can last for a long time. A psychologist can help them to process grief effectively.
  • Coping with habits - People who deal with bad habits can get therapeutic help to treat their conditions. It includes situations like lack of sleep, eating disorders, and addictions like alcohol or drug misuse.
  • Living with a chronic condition - A chronic illness can cause people to live in fear and depression. Talking with a clinical psychologist near you can help you see life from a different perspective and even enrich it in other ways.
  • Dealing with phobias - People can develop phobias throughout their lives consciously or subconsciously. Phobias can significantly affect the way people live and disrupt their lives. Psychologists can help educate on how to deal with phobias with evidence-based strategies.
  • Mental disorders - Stressful situations can give rise to different mental disorders, like bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and schizophrenia. Most conditions are treatable with personalized treatment plans or via medications.

What to expect during your first appointment with a psychologist near you?

Starting therapy, particularly the first session, can make you feel anxious or worried. To help manage any stress or fear, here's what you can expect throughout the process.

During your initial appointment, you and your therapist will discuss your concerns and outline your expectations from the treatment. Your psychologist will likely ask about various aspects, such as why you seek therapy, your background and lifestyle, previous treatments, and therapy goals. If you feel uncomfortable conversing about these during the intake session, feel free to communicate the same to your psychologist. That's because therapy should be a safe space to address your issues at your own pace.

You can also ask about the therapy process or your therapist specifically, like their qualifications and experience, treatment fees, insurance details, and the nature of the treatment plan. Inquire about the kinds of therapy they offer to get an idea of what your future sessions might involve. Common approaches in psychotherapy include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy, psychodynamic therapy, eclectic therapy, humanistic therapy, and art and music therapy.

Before the session, your psychologist may request you to sign an "informed consent" document to confirm your agreement to enter therapy. This document usually includes your therapist's name and licensing information, practice policies and fees, the anticipated course of therapy, and information about the limits of confidentiality and patient rights. You might also need to complete additional medical and mental health history questionnaires. Answer these honestly to help the psychologist better understand your condition.

After the intake session, consultations typically occur weekly. A few individuals may require more frequent sessions, while others might have appointments every other week or monthly. Additionally, some therapists assign homework to complete between sessions.

The importance of therapy for mental health

Therapy is crucial to mental well-being, supporting and guiding those navigating emotional challenges. Despite lingering stigma, seeking therapy is an act of self-care that fosters resilience and empowers individuals to lead fulfilling lives. Let's discuss the benefits in detail:

  • Understanding therapy

Therapy, also called counseling or psychotherapy, helps individuals manage emotional distress, cope with mental health conditions, and grow personally. It provides a confidential space where a psychiatrist near you can help you explore thoughts, emotions, and experiences.

  • Challenging stigma

Many people are hesitant to seek therapy owing to misconceptions. However, reaching out for help is a sign of strength. By promoting open discussions about mental health, we can create a more supportive society where seeking therapy is normalized.

  • The therapist-client relationship

Collaboration, empathy, and trust are the cornerstones of a successful therapy session. This connection allows individuals to express themselves freely and gain insight in a safe, judgment-free environment.

  • Healing from trauma

Therapy helps individuals process past traumas and emotional wounds through techniques like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and trauma-focused therapy. This process aids in emotional healing and rebuilding resilience.

  • Managing mental health conditions

For conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and bipolar disorder, therapy is a key part of treatment. A psychiatrist near you might tailor therapy plans to help clients manage symptoms, challenge negative thoughts, and develop coping strategies.

  • Encouraging self-discovery

Beyond addressing mental health concerns, therapy promotes self-awareness and personal growth. It helps individuals understand their values, beliefs, and goals, fostering self-acceptance and confidence.

  • Building coping skills

Therapy equips people with tools to handle stress, relationship issues, grief, and major life changes. These skills enhance resilience and improve emotional well-being.

  • Empowering individuals

Therapy encourages self-efficacy by helping individuals recognize their strengths, set meaningful goals, and take proactive steps toward positive change.

  • Creating support networks

People can connect with others who have gone through similar things because of the sense of community that group therapy and support groups provide. These connections provide encouragement and emotional support.

  • Embracing holistic well-being

Therapy encourages a balanced approach to wellness, addressing emotional, physical, and social health. Individuals can build a sense of fulfillment and purpose by encouraging harmony in all parts of their lives. A psychiatrist near you might be the perfect choice to embrace this blend.
