He is one of California's early pioneers of refractive surgery. Over four decades he has personally performed well over 95,000 procedures — LASIK, PRK, and pterygium (carnosidad) surgery — part of the more than 650,000 procedures completed across Laser Eye Center's six locations, and he has mentored many ophthalmologists practicing in California today. A recipient of the Centurion Surgeon and Quality of Vision awards, Dr. Shammas completed his fellowship at the Doheny Eye Institute, then affiliated with the University of Southern California (USC), and has authored peer-reviewed research in refractive surgery. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS). Decades in, Dr. Shammas still operates every day, driven by the difference clear vision makes in his patients' lives.
