He was born & raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and he attended Penn State University's Schreyer Honors College, where he completed an undergraduate research thesis in Cancer Biology and graduated with Honors in Biology. He then moved to New York City to complete his medical education at the NYU School of Medicine, during which time he engaged in basic science research within the Department of Infectious Disease and was awarded the Benjamin H. Kean Travel Fellowship in Tropical Medicine, affording him the opportunity to spend the summer of 2010 investigating the pathogenicity of malaria within the jungles of the Peruvian Amazon. He completed his neurology residency training at The Mount Sinai Hospital, where he developed and piloted the Mental Health Comes First Program, a quality improvement initiative aimed to promote resident wellness and identify trends of burnout, the findings of which he presented at the 142nd annual meeting of the American Neurological Association. He returned to NYU to complete his epilepsy fellowship training, engaging in clinical research examining clinical and radiologic outcomes following epilepsy surgery, and utilizing MRI brain volumetric analysis to identify potential corollaries between the burden of congenital brain malformations and various clinical and epidemiologic factors in epilepsy patients. Dr. Cunningham currently serves as the Director of Epilepsy at Maimonides, providing care to epilepsy patients within the outpatient, hospital and critical care settings, and is currently in the process of joining a multi-center international case-control study of SUDEP. He additionally serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at SUNY Downstate, devoting a significant portion of his time to medical student & resident education.
