Dr. Christo Franklin, PsyD

Psychologist
CA
The most important thing for getting the best therapy results-and the soonest-is whether you feel comfortable and like I truly understand where you're coming from. The second most important thing is that you feel our plan-how we're going to work together-is exactly right for you. I bring a PsyD in Clinical Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, a Master's in Divinity from Yale University, and a Bachelor's degree from Princeton University, all of which inform my approach to personalized, compassionate care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a really unusual combination of qualities. Maybe you are too?... I studied at Princeton and Yale. I trained to be an Episcopal priest; I love and married a Muslim woman, whose parents are from India/ Bangladesh. We both appreciate Zen. Growing up with divorced parents, I went back and forth from my father's farm to my mother's townhouse...and felt at home nowhere. I fostered two people since they were 10, who are like a son and daughter to me. I served a Spanish-language, Mexican immigrant, LGBTQ+ Episcopal church in Los Angeles. (I know! REALLY unusual combination, right?) I have taught psychology at undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels. I used to be a hospice chaplain and suicide negotiator (as a registered psychologist, not as a police officer) and a consulting suicidologist for ICE (yes, in 2 detention facilities, one for children the other, adults). I've worked with many types of law enforcement, yet my politics are Marxist (Socialist Equality Party). Nowadays, I work with adult couples and individuals. I'm sex worker positive. And I do evaluations for people adopting orphans in India.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Well it begins with getting a sense of what you've been through and how you're doing, both in terms of symptoms and your life-priorities...and how you want your life to be better. This will be no, "So tell me about your week" or "How did that make you feel?" therapy. This will be very interactive, very engaging. You have goals; let's be results-oriented. I will show you new techniques to use, and we will record results, to measure your gains. Let's make this fun as well as very rewarding. Technically speaking, my methods are attachment-focused and trauma-informed. I use Johnson's emotion-focused method (not what it sounds like), EMDR/Flash, MBCT, and neuroplastic and metabolic interventions. An amazing amount of improvement can be gained by decreasing inflammation, improving gut biome, and improving mitochondrial functioning.
