“I love Dr. Cira and have ended up seeing her now for over a year. She's insightful, respectful and helpful. I absolutely adore her and will continue to see her as long as I am in this city. She's really great with women's issues (coming from a woman who saw her for body image and perfectionism). Also, she's an adopter of new technologies (such as payment services) to continuously improve the patient experience ”

Getting to know Dr. Colleen Cira
Dr. Colleen Cira is the Founder and Executive Director of Cira Center for Behavioral Health, PC. She is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and received her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology. She has worked with individuals, families, couples, children, and adolescents in a variety of settings including Children’s Memorial Hospital, Mt. Sinai Hospital, Northwestern University College Counseling Center, Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center as well as private/group practices in both the city of Chicago and surrounding suburbs. Dr. Cira is also a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP).
Dr. Cira practices integratively, often going back and forth between the past and the present. She utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness/Meditation to help people decrease the symptoms that brought them into treatment in the first place. But she also believes that early life experiences profoundly shape who we are and believes that it isn’t until we fully understand how we came to be who we are that we can truly shape our own destiny. Through the combination of insight, self-reflection and learning new skills, people can see tremendous change in their lives.
While Dr. Cira helps people with many psychological and behavioral difficulties, including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, relational difficulties, and trauma, her primary areas of specialty is the treatment of relationship problems, sexual abuse/assault, relational/developmental trauma (very difficult childhoods) and parenting/motherhood. Additionally, she is certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), an evidence-based intervention that has been proven effective for treating chronic as well as single incident trauma.
What should a new client know about working with you?
We at Cira Center for Behavioral Health (CCBH) believe that therapy is based on research & science, both of which are incredibly important, but know that nothing is more important than feeling heard & understood without any judgment. The process for new clients is to schedule an intake session through ZocDoc. Clients will then receive a confirmation email and instructions from our Client Care Coordinator . All further scheduling will be done directly through your therapist. Please note there is paperwork to be completed before your intake session (more information will be included on your confirmation email).
What is your typical process for working with clients?
PLEASE NOTE THAT THERAPY SESSIONS ARE CONDUCTED WEEKLY ON THE SAME DAY AND TIME. Clients will typically have 2 intake sessions in which the therapist will ask some questions about their presenting issue, upbringing, current living situation, support system, symptoms, and experiences across the lifespan. The therapist will then issue a diagnosis and set up a treatment plan for the client, which may involve weekly therapy sessions for a certain period of time.

I was having some anxiety problems starting early this year. It went on for months. My thoughts were spinning out of control causing various physical symptoms. After exhausting the patience of many doctors, one recommended I see a psychologist for health anxiety. I had never seen a psychologist before and felt quite ignorant not knowing what health anxiety even was. After just few sessions with Dr. Cira, I started to finally feel better. For months I felt hopeless, whereas now I see a light at the end of the tunnel. She has helped me recognize the signs and symptoms of health anxiety. This was the first psychologist I have worked with and I could not be happier. She is knowledgeable in her field, and really takes the time to listen to my problems before we work through each one. She offers insightful thoughts and questions that have really opened my eyes and made me think. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Cira to anyone.

Dr. Cira is welcoming, warm and thought provoking. She allows me to talk and then chimes in with insightful observations or additional probing questions. I've seen her several times and am feeling great after each visit.

She listened to me, which was very important. I thought the visit went great. I was able to tell her the problems I was having, and she was able to help me find solutions, and is confident that she can help me. That's all that I can really hope for right now.

I have been a patient of Coleen's for almost one year and very rarely have I felt this comfortable speaking w/ an individual. Coleen's professionalism is stellar, she makes sure that your voice is heard, and guides you to making your own decisions vs. intruding her own thoughts. Coleen has, and continues to help me tremendously, and I would recommend her to anyone without hesitation.
