Getting to know Dr. Erika Phelan

I have been working with older adults for more than half of my career. I started in nursing homes and rehabilitation centers, helping people cope with loss related to health issues and cognitive decline. I helped them find meaning and hope, which are so important throughout our lifespan, and I found this work extremely rewarding. During the pandemic in 2020, I began seeing younger adults virtually, and as of last year, I have returned to working with older adults. The concerns I have the most experience with are grief, anxiety, depression, addiction, trauma, and a history of abuse.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am warm, empathic, and encouraging. I do not push clients to process what they are not ready for, but I am honest when I see the benefits of doing so. I take the time to understand each client’s life story and provide recommendations that I feel would best support their goals. I believe in a collaborative approach, and that we are working toward the same goals together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first session together, I will ask questions to understand how you’re doing emotionally and what you would like to work on in therapy. I will make sure you feel safe and comfortable opening up. I will also discuss how therapy works, share my therapeutic approach, and answer any questions you might have.
