About Dr. Fuad Makkouk

Dr Makkouk was born and raised in Austin, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, and completed his retinal surgery fellowship at the Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Makkouk and the team at Austin Eye Center provide cutting-edge ophthalmologic care in a patient-centered, boutique setting.
Outside of the office, you'll find Dr. Makkouk spending time with his wife, Diana, on Town Lake, hiking the Greenbelt, or Fishing.
Using the most innovative techniques in cataract and retinal surgery, including laser treatments and intravitreal injections, Dr. Makkouk provides individualized treatment for patients ages 12 and older. His special interests span a wide range of ophthalmologic problems, including macular degeneration, retinal detachment, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy.
Dr. Makkouk’s path to ophthalmology began right in Austin, when he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with high honors and a degree in biochemistry. He went on to earn his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas, before finishing an internship at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Dr. Makkouk completed his residency at UTMB, where he was named ophthalmology chief resident. He then returned to Yale University as a vitreoretinal surgery fellow and clinical instructor.
As leader in his field, Dr. Makkouk is committed to medical excellence and community service. His many accomplishments include being a Clinical Instructor at Yale University, and receiving awards for citizenship and leadership from UTMB. Dr. Makkouk has published numerous research papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented at various conferences across the United States.

My visit with Dr. Makkouk went very well. He sought out information from me about my eyesight issue and his feedback was very helpful. He did a thorough examination using the most up to date instrumentation. He answered all my questions with thorough explanations. After filling a short information form, I was immediately taken by to the test room for retina scans and pressure measurements. I was then taken to the examination room and Dr. Makkouk joined me in a few minutes. He listened carefully to my questions and concerns and then was very thorough in responding. Dr. Makkouk has a friendly and professional manner that put me at ease and his thoroughness gave me comfort that I had received good medical advice. I saw Dr. Makkouk because I had been uncomfortable with the clinical manner and advice I had experienced from my former ophthalmologist.
I highly recommend Dr. Makkouk and Austin Eye Center to anyone needing care from a doctor of opthamology.

I visited Dr.Makkouk to get a new prescription for my eye glasses. I was aware that i have cataract, however i didn't know how much it gre since my last appointment with my eye doctor in Florida.
Dr.Makkouk was kind enough to show me the eye scan pictures which convinced me that I must get my cataract removed asap. He told me a new prescription glasses will not fix the problem.
As a result , I made appointment with my eye doctor in Florida and it will be done soon.
