Dr. Ghulam Waris, MD

Dr. Ghulam Waris, MD

Primary Care Doctor
MD
I was always a helpful young fellow at home, and when I was 7, my dad, a successful businessman, said at dinner, "I want you to help people and become a doctor." That day on, I was on a journey to serve. He named me Ghulam, meaning "one who serves." At 18, I studied medicine at Universidad Tecnol?gica de Santiago Escuela de Medicina, Santiago Campus. I then returned to the US for postgraduate training. After residency in Internal Medicine at Seton Hall University Program B at Jersey City Medical Center, I worked as a house officer at Lyons V.A. Hospital for a year before joining Urban Health Center in Bronx, N.Y., as a Primary Care Physician. I worked in adult medicine, MRDD clinic, and HIV/AIDS clinic for a few years, helping patients in the Bronx. I was then hired as Medical Director for Illinois at Shapiro Developmental Center in Kankakee, overseeing 720 residents. This role reflected my passion for providing the best care for vulnerable populations with mental and intellectual disabilities. After four years, I transferred to Holly Center in Salisbury, Maryland, to improve medical care. In my free time on weekends and evenings, I helped nursing home residents at Deer's Head Hospital Center, Lower Shore Mental Health Clinic, and Hudson Health Rehab and Addiction Center. In 2007, I began working with Coastal Hospice and Palliative Care and Tidal Health Center to support patients during end-of-life care. Since the pandemic, I have helped uninsured patients via Telehealth during evenings and weekends. I have not forgotten my dad's message that helping humanity is life's main purpose, regardless of socioeconomic status, race, religion, or sexual orientation. I am fluent in English, Spanish, Hindi, and Urdu. In my free hours, I enjoy reading, cooking, and watching soccer.
