What should a new client know about working with you?

The relationship between a psychologist and a client is unique. It provides a context for the client to express a range of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, a chance to clarify the struggles within and outside themself, and an opportunity to work with another person who encourages movement toward their goals with an understanding of the ways we get "off course" sometimes. Clients willing to learn, work toward flexibility of thought, and are consciously motivated to change themselves have more success with me. With a rich tapestry of experience as a licensed psychologist, professional mediator, arbitrator, and former educator, I offer a dynamic understanding of conflicts - between others and within ourselves - that bridges the gaps between discouragement and hope, criticism, and compassion and blame and accountability; to develop practical insights toward change. Those reluctant to seek therapy often benefit from meeting with me, and "one size fits all" is not true when deciding on a therapist. Trust, safety, and respect are essential in all relationships, but sometimes, working with someone who challenges our thinking and engages us directly can offer the most significant opportunity for change. I use ideas/interventions from Humanistic (strengths/potential emphasizing self-awareness/growth), Cognitive Behavior (thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to identify negative thinking and develop better coping), Systemic (part of a more extensive system and behavior affects others), MI (motivation to change) and Psychodynamic (understand how past experiences affect current behaviors).

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Through a free initial fifteen-minute video consultation, the client and therapist can discuss the general reason for seeking psychotherapy, the preferred format for the meeting, and the payment structure to plan for an initial meeting or appropriate referral. Follow-up meetings proceed with a four-meeting contract to develop a treatment plan and review the interaction style to determine whether additional meetings will be scheduled to establish the following number of meetings for the therapy contract. It is essential that the client feel actively engaged in the treatment plan and progress, making sure things are moving in the best direction for the client. The psychotherapy contract can vary between short-term and longer-term, but the progress and intervention methods must be discussed throughout the working alliance between the client and psychologist.
