“Dr. Craft seems great so far. He listened, asked questions, and wanted to understand what I want to get out of our appointments. My only complaint is the office itself. The appointments are virtual and they send you the link to the appointment room days beforehand, buried at the end of an email. It wasn't clear it was there at all.”

Getting to know Dr. James Randolph Craft

*Note that prior to the first session with the provider, LifeStance will require a credit card on file. *This provider only treats patients residing in the state of Virginia. Dr. Craft received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1997 from Virginia Commonwealth University. His major training was in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. He has also been influenced by Gestalt Therapy, Buddhist psychology, and Schema Therapy. In his previous work, he has worked in both juvenile and adult correctional facilities as well as hospital settings, where he treated patients with serious mental illnesses including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, long-term depression, and dementia. Dr. Craft maintained a private practice for 11 years as well. In addition to being a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, he is also a Certified Sex Offender Treatment Provider. Through his training, he has come to understand both the offender and the trauma experienced by those who have been offended against. His approach to therapy is a collaboration between the client and therapist. It may involve identifying and correcting maladaptive thinking patterns. Understanding family of origin issues such as attachment problems, trauma, or recurring behaviors learned as a child to cope with family issues that surface in non-family relationships may be important. Identifying triggers to emotional responses and learning to decouple from those triggers can also be helpful. Learning mindfulness techniques can help a person improve focus and become aware if they have slipped into thinking about the past, which cannot be changed, or projected themselves into a future that may be different than imagined. Both states can lead one to create emotional states that do not serve the person well.
