Dr. Ferguson was born and raised in South Africa. He earned a bachelor's degree and medical degree from University of Cape Town in South Africa. He then completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Cardiology and Electrophysiology at Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals in Oxford, England. While in Oxford, Dr. Ferguson also did a two year Medical Doctorate research degree investigating cardiac pacing. Following this, he moved to the United States and completed an additional Electrophysiology fellowship at the University of Virginia. During his time at UVA he was promoted to Professor of Medicine, with an endowed Chair and was Director of Clinical Electrophysiology for 5 years. “I strive together with my colleagues to provide compassionate, efficient and excellent clinical care for all my patients.” Dr. Ferguson’s training and research is in clinical electrophysiology. Most of his patients have abnormal heart rhythms and typically have symptoms of palpitations, racing heart beats, dizziness, blackouts, shortness of breath or fatigue. These symptoms may represent slow, fast or irregular heart rhythms. These abnormal rhythms can be treated with medications, pacemakers or implantable defibrillators or a procedure called catheter ablation. He is experienced in all supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmia ablation including epicardial techniques and does all sorts of cardiac device implants. He has a particular interest in atrial fibrillation ablation using non-fluoroscopic techniques and mapping of ventricular tachycardia. When he is not at work, Dr. Ferguson enjoys biking, skiing, hiking, reading and traveling all over the world with his wife and two sons.
