About Dr. Joseph LaPlaca
Dr. Joe LaPlaca was raised in Janesville, Wisconsin. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Biology and a minor in Chemistry from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He then obtained his Doctor of Optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Illinois, in 2009. Aside from comprehensive, contact lens, and pediatric exams, Dr. Joe routinely manages glaucoma, contact lens-related infections, dry eye syndrome, diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy, as well as postoperative care for cataracts and laser vision correction.
In July 2018, Dr. Joe decided to pursue his real passion of Sports Vision Training and Enhancement and started Ares Elite Sports Vision to help athletes gain their competitive edge. Combining his love of the visual system, cutting-edge technology, and extensive history with sports—including soccer, basketball, hockey, volleyball, and being a 1st Degree Black Belt—has always been his main goal.
Dr. Joe met his wife, Dr. Deanna Dwenger, while working in Chicago as she was finishing her schooling at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. They were married in the spring of 2014 in the Riviera Maya, Mexico. In his free time, Dr. Joe loves to spend time with his daughter Remington and son Asher.

Joe was phenomenal! Subject matter expert with incredible knowledge about his craft. He took the time to explain every single detail to me and was very thorough with all the explanations. He allowed me to process the information and ask as many questions as I needed. We discussed my goals and a game plan of achieving them together. During our session, he was very encouraging while also challenging me to be better. I would highly recommend, Joe to anyone out there - he is the best!! Thank you, Joe!

My girls have been training with Dr. Joe LaPlaca for over a year now and we are blown away by the impact it has had on them both on the court and in school. Dr. LaPlaca specializes in Sports Vision Optometry, which is a rapidly growing field among elite athletes. He has worked with 10+ Indycar Drivers, Indycar Pitcrews, Indycar Spotters, NFL, NBA, MLB, MLS, The Indy XL of the USL, MANY Division 1 collegiate athletes, IndyLights/Pro, USF2000, F3, F4, Karting and many other highly gifted/recruited high school athletes. Dr. LaPlaca is involved in several community outreach programs and cares about people. I honestly cannot say enough how awesome he is and the impact his training has on athletes!! CHECK HIM OUT!!!!

I took my sons to Dr Laplaca for an exam and training demo. He was so knowledgeable and fun, the kids had a blast and I learned a lot. He was really great with the kids, speaking to them so they could understand but not talking down to them. Will definitely be returning for routine exams and training when they’re old enough!

Dr Joe and Areas Elite has been amazing for both of my kids. We have seen significant growth in all aspects of their training. Your vision and reflexes are the most important aspects for on the court transfer. The methods and techniques that Areas uses are an invaluable asset that transfers over from the exam room to the field of play. This is a must for all athletes looking to take their game to the next level.

Dr. LaPlaca is always there to answer any questions, give you suggestions and is honest on what he telling you. What he has done with my son as an athlete and so many others, such as college level to professional is amazing. Dr. LaPlaca is a great eye doctor.

We really enjoy working with Dr. LaPlaca. He is friendly, knowledgeable, and truly cares about all of his patients. My son looks forward to his appointment with Dr. LaPlaca every week and we are seeing excellent results both on the kart track and off. It is really fun to watch how the exercises he does during his appointments transfer to the race track and beyond.
If you’re an athlete looking for a way to get a little more advantage over your opponents, vision training with Dr. LaPlaca is the way to go.

Dr. LaPlaca is very knowledgeable and an excellent doctor. He has helped both of my kids with visual issues that other doctors haven’t caught and corrected them quickly with vision exercises. My son is a professional racing driver, and his reaction time and visual skills have improved tremendously in the time he has been working with Dr. LaPlaca. I also see him for my own annual exams, which is nice because I can take the whole family in to be seen together, even though he specializes in sports vision.
