About Dr. Karina Reed
Philosophy of care
One of the most important things to me is educating patients about gynecologic and obstetric care, including discussing what is normal and what is not. I like to talk with patients in a way that allows them to feel involved in their care. I want patients to lead the visit and talk about what’s most important to them, rather than me focusing on what I think is most important. That’s part of patient-centered care – having patients advocate for their own health care and having doctors respond to patients’ main concerns.
Why I entered medicine
I always loved science as a kid and was exposed to medicine through my mom, a nurse, and two sisters who are physicians. I considered other science-related careers but always came back to medicine. I became interested in obstetrics and gynecology when my older sister was an OB-GYN resident but truly fell in love with it during my own third-year rotation. No other specialty was as exciting and interesting.
Education and training
I earned my Bachelor’s degree from Dickinson College. I received my Doctor of Medicine from Temple University. I completed my internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
Community involvement
I’m part of the Pennsylvania Medical Society. Because I live in the area, I see many patients whose children I delivered, and it’s always nice to run into them. It’s fun to watch babies I delivered grow and to have parents tell their kids I helped bring them into the world.
Personal interests
Outside of work, most of my time is taken up by activities with my kids. I enjoy running and have completed multiple races, including several half marathons. Some are charitable events, including the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, supporting the fight against breast cancer. I also like to travel, especially to warm, sunny places like Florida or the Bahamas.
