Dr. Katherine Lenger, PhD

Dr. Katherine Lenger, PhD

Psychologist
NC
I am a licensed psychologist who specializes in working with couples. I work with couples at every stage — from those who are doing well and want to stay that way, to those navigating something really hard. I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Tennessee and completed advanced training at Brown University, including a predoctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship in trauma recovery. I have additional advanced training in perinatal mental health and the transition to parenthood, which comes up often with the couples I see. My background is in relationship science research. I've published more than thirty peer-reviewed papers on what predicts whether relationships hold up, and I still teach and write in the field. That's the lens I bring to sessions — I pay attention to what's specifically happening between the two of you rather than offering general advice about communication.

Getting to know Dr. Katherine Lenger

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is collaborative and grounded in methods that have strong research support. The goal is to help you understand what's happening in your relationship — the patterns, the cycles, the things that keep coming up — and to work together toward something more workable and sustainable. That might mean reducing conflict, deepening connection, building specific skills, or simply getting a clearer picture of where you are.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I work exclusively with couples, on a private-pay basis ($275 for a 55-minute session); I don't bill insurance). Deciding who to work with in couples therapy is a big decision, and it matters that you both feel comfortable. If you'd like to meet first, you can schedule a brief, no-cost consultation through my website. If we decide to work together, our first few sessions focus on assessment. What that looks like depends on what you bring in, so the first session is mostly about understanding what's going on for you and which approach is likely to fit. That might mean questionnaires, individual sessions with each of you, or, most often, a combination. Once I have that picture, I'll share what I'm seeing and what I think our work should focus on. Much of our time goes to how you two connect: talking about hard things without it turning into a fight, getting back on track when it does, and feeling closer along the way. We'll also work on the specific changes that brought you in, whether that's money, intimacy, parenting, or something else. You'll also leave most sessions with something to work on between them.
