Getting to know Dr. Luis Aguilar
I am a California-licensed psychologist (PSY 34659) specializing in clinical neuropsychology. I provide comprehensive, individualized evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults with concerns involving attention/ADHD, memory, learning, executive functioning, autism and other developmental differences, traumatic brain injury/concussion, neurological conditions, and the cognitive effects of emotional or medical concerns.
My goal is not simply to generate test scores or assign a diagnosis. I work to answer the questions that brought you to care: What is happening? What factors may be contributing? What are your strengths? And what can help next?
My approach integrates clinical interview, developmental, educational, medical, and psychosocial history, standardized testing, behavioral observations, and relevant records or collateral information when appropriate. I place particular emphasis on differential diagnosis, including situations in which cognitive, neurological, psychiatric, sleep, developmental, and psychosocial factors may overlap.
I provide services in English and Spanish and approach each evaluation with attention to language, culture, and lived experience. Patients can expect a thoughtful, respectful process; clear explanations of findings; and practical recommendations designed to support meaningful next steps at home, school, work, or in treatment.
What should a new client know about working with you?
You can expect a collaborative, structured, and individualized approach. Many people come to an evaluation feeling uncertain about why they are struggling or frustrated by symptoms that have been attributed to several different causes. My role is to help organize that complexity and develop the clearest clinical picture possible.
I do not approach assessment as a “test-and-score” exercise. I look for patterns across your history, daily functioning, behavior, and test performance, including both strengths and areas of difficulty. I also consider reasonable alternative explanations before drawing conclusions. This is especially important when symptoms such as inattention, forgetfulness, slowed thinking, or executive difficulties could reflect more than one factor.
Throughout the process, I aim to explain what we are evaluating and why, answer questions directly, and make the findings understandable rather than overly technical. Feedback is focused not only on diagnosis, but on what the results mean for everyday life and what actions may be most useful.
I value precision, respect, and transparency. The goal is for you to leave the process with greater clarity about your cognitive and emotional functioning, a better understanding of your strengths, and recommendations that are specific enough to use.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
The exact process is tailored to the reason for your visit, but a comprehensive evaluation typically occurs in several stages.
We begin with a clinical interview to understand your current concerns, goals, relevant history, and day-to-day functioning. I use this information to clarify the referral question and determine which areas should be examined most closely.
When appropriate, I review relevant medical, educational, psychological, or other records and may incorporate collateral information from a parent, partner, family member, or other professional. This helps place test results in the context of your real-world functioning.
Testing is then selected specifically for the clinical question rather than using the same battery for every patient. Depending on the referral, assessment may examine areas such as attention, processing speed, learning and memory, language, executive functioning, visuospatial abilities, academic skills, emotional functioning, and everyday functioning.
After testing, I integrate the interview, records, observations, and test data to develop the diagnostic formulation. We then review the findings in a feedback session using clear, practical language. For comprehensive evaluations, the written report summarizes the results, clinical impressions, and individualized recommendations.
Because every referral is different, the number and length of appointments may vary according to the clinical question and scope of the evaluation.
