About Dr. Luis Chanes
Luis Chanes is a dedicated and insightful ophthalmologist serving the communities of Santa Ana and Mission Viejo, California. He earned his medical degree from Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico. He furthered his studies through an internship, a fellowship at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, and then he completed his residency as chief resident at Saint Luke’s Hospital. He is Board-certified.
Dr. Chanes provides a full range of eye care services. His special interests include refractive surgery, corneas, cataract/IOL implants, and general ophthalmology. In addition to his practice, he has conducted numerous research projects and publishes findings in scholarly journals. He is greatly interested in keeping up with the latest knowledge in order to provide his patients the best care. I received a message from you stating: "Hi, Zoya. You're scheduled to see Dr. Luis Chanes, MD on Wednesday, March 25 at 10:20 AM PDT. We want to ensure a smooth visit."
I arrived at the scheduled time, but the doctor had absolutely no information from you. I was refused the appointment. I had traveled a long distance to get there. I consider your actions to be fraudulent. You sent me information confirming that I had an appointment, yet the doctor's office knew nothing about it.

Office had no clue I had made an appointment 2 weeks earlier. I showed up and they told me that the last time I had come in to that eye doctor was 6 years ago… um I haven’t even visited CA prior to 4 months ago how could I have see the eye doctor then. Oh they’re bad! Just told me the wrong patients info! doctor doesn’t even do eye exams even tho on zocdoc it says he does. They had to reschedule me and it was a terrible experience. The equipment is so dirty and covered in grease and dust. It very obvious they do not clean their equipment. Instead of using the test that blows air into your eye they use this handheld device which touches your eye. Immediately afterwards I wonder how they clean it since there’s not a piece that pops off. Figured someone would come in after us and clean all the eye exam stuff but no I literally watched a tech and a patient go in immediately after me. The eye dr printed off the wrong rx and I had to wait through her to finish another apt to fix it.

Don’t book through Zocdoc especially if you have an emergency. The receptionist who called me was extremely rude. She also stated that when you book on here it’s only an appointment request. So if you make an appointment here don’t expect to actually be seen at that date or time. I needed my eye checked ASAP as i was scratched and injured by my dog. Be honest about the appointment making process and hire better receptionists.

Make sure you book your appointment at the Dr office. Zocdoc emailed me different appointment days and times that were supposedly all
confirmed. When I got to the office for my intended appointment nobody was aware of it.

Dr. Chances is the BEST!! He was so kind and knowledgeable! He did a thorough exam and didn’t rush like most doctors. He answered all my questions and made me feel comfortable. I can tell he truly cares for his patients. I’m so thankful I went to Dr. Chanes. He’s an EXCELLENT doctor.

Dr. Chanes is a great with a very cheerful character. And so are his staff.
Unfortunately they didn’t accept the filled online patient forms which I’ve filled and checked-in online assuming that would save me time.
It didn’t i actually had to fill them agin on paper when I was in the office.

I commend Dr. Chanes for taking patients with less desirable insurance which means his services are in high demand. The next available appointment is 10 weeks out. His staff was helpful and pleasant. Dr. Chanes was businesslike and pleasant. The diagnostic equipment seemed modern, but I'm no expert. I would give 5 stars recommendation if appointments were not so far in the future.

This isn't really about the doctor at all but the office itself. They are very unprofessional and took me FOREVER to receive my contact lenses. The woman in charge of the contact place is extremely careless. I went there for my initial appointment in May! It is SEPTEMBER (4 months!) and still have not received my contact lenses. She's either on vacation or we are playing phone tag. I went to the office almost every month wasting my own time trying to receive them and they aren't there even though she kept telling me they were. I never thought an eye exam would be so painful and difficult. Lenscrafters is more professional than this place.

Dr. Chanes has a lovely demeanor. I had gone to another ophthalmologist a couple of years ago about my issue, and the doctor was worthless. Dr. Chanes looked at my first eye and said he knew right away exactly what was wrong and how to treat it. I couldn't have been happier because I have truly suffered with burning eyes for over 3 years now. His staff was very professional, helpful, and friendly. Highly recommend this doctor and his staff!

Long wait before I was called despite being early than the appointment time. and I don't see a connection between me and my doctor. Not thorough on the explanation; seems like in a hurry; did not show 100% attention to new patient's concern such as learning thoroughly my medical history. Feels like, as a new patient, first time check up is just routinary.

Overall the visit was pretty decent. The doctor answered my questions and provided me with a quick and (I'm hoping) accurate diagnosis. He was very kind and everything went well. My only complaint was the wait time. Even though I pre-filled all of my information on ZocDoc I was required to fill out similar paperwork upon my arrival. I anticipated, this, however, and arrived 20 minutes early. My paperwork was submitted at just about the time I was scheduled to arrive, however, even with all the prep, I was still left waiting about an hour before I actually saw the doctor. While this left a sour taste in my mouth, it wouldn't necessarily keep me from returning. I just wish the system was setup to show more respect my time as I tried to show for the doctor's.

He was very nice. However, I was called to make an earlier appointment, then when I got there early I had to wait an hour and a half to be seen. Why call to make an appointment if you have to wait so long? It was very frustrating and I was not even given an apology for waiting so long, they just said it is always like this.

Friendly, BUSY staff. Long wait time, but somehow felt Dr. Chanes gave me a good exam and I have scheduled for caterac surgery.
HOWEVER, even though I filled out the form on ZocDoc, I still had to RE-DO the form in their office!! Aggravating! ZocDoc should have Dr. Chanes' form on their site.

All the staffs were nice and helpful. It was my first time here and all I can say is that I do not regret coming here. Dr Chanes was also great! I recommend him and the place. I had my appointment at 10am but I waited 40mibutes. I did get there on time so get there a little earlier to fill out the paper work which is not a lot but they also have to see if your insurance covers it.

Absoutely awful experience. I made a specific appt, was made to wait 55 minutes, and then the Dr runs in and only spends 5 mins with me writing a quick prescription and he was gone? Really?? Where am I at, a fast food restaurant? Once they get your money and collect the co pay, they could care less, that is how I felt. I want to call my insurance company and dispute the charge as it was a complete waste of time and now I have to go see another Dr, because I don't believe 5 minutes is sufficient enough, especially after waiting 55 minutes. Get it together at this office and don't overbook!

Had to wait an hour to be seen, then it took another hour and fifteen minutes for the doctor to see me for a total of 10 minutes max. Good guy, seemed knowledgeable, but it is obvious they are packing in as many clients as possible so avoid unless you have a couple hours of free time you don't mind wasting.
