About Dr. Nguyen Dr. Mai Nguyen is a general adult psychiatrist. She was born and raised in Houston, Texas. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Science in biology. She stayed in Houston to attend medical school at Baylor College of Medicine, and subsequently moved to Chicago where she completed her residency training in psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago. While in residency, Dr. Nguyen worked part-time at the Eating Recovery Center, which specializes in the treatment of eating disorders and comorbid mood and anxiety disorders in either a residential or partial hospitalization setting.
Dr. Nguyen is skillfully trained in the psychiatric medication management of a variety of mental illnesses including but not limited to depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, women's mental health, post traumatic stress disorder, and psychosis. In addition to psychopharmacology, she also emphasizes the importance of environmental factors, lifestyle modifications, and therapeutic approaches. Dr. Nguyen is interested in understanding each patient's individual story. She believes in the value of a strong collaborative therapeutic alliance, and she is passionate about helping patients improve their quality of life.
Please note Dr. Nguyen's policy for prescribing stimulants: In order to be considered for stimulants, patients must have neuropsychological testing completed with results that support a diagnosis of ADHD.

She’s a great listener and allows me to be involved with my treatment (rather than other doctors who sometimes are adverse to listening to what their patients think may help them). This review is specifically for the Uptown Psych office in general. If you're looking for a doctor, please double check that the address listed is NOT Uptown Psych.
After my pharmacy tried to contact the practice several times to refill a prescription, I finally called. While they confirmed that they had received at least one message from the pharmacy, I was told that they'd refill the prescription "when [they] get to it." I asked if it could be filled that day (the pharmacy was about to be closed for New Years and I was officially out of my prescription) and the response was a hard "maybe, we'll see if we get to it." I was upset, and the staff member was rude about it.
Again, the doctors themselves might be fine. Dr. Nguyen was totally fine. But I'd rather look for a new provider than ever deal with that office again.

Dr. Nguyen is the most thorough, empathetic, and knowledgeable psychiatrist I've ever been to. She listens to the details of your symptoms and history to really try to find the best option for you. I never doubted for a second that I could trust her to help me make good decisions about medication, instead of just prescribing whatever pill the pharma companies want her to.
I'd absolutely recommend her!

Ok visit - Dr. Nguyen (pronounced “win”) was knowledgeable, direct and was able to help with my reason for the visit. I have yet to find a psychiatrist in America that is interested in hearing more about what is going on with my life before prescribing medication.
It feels like a severe disconnect that the Doctor prescribing your mood/behavior meds is different than the therapist who listens to why you are feeling a certain way or can iron out unresolved issues you have. My Canadian must really be showing ....

Dr. Mai was really sweet. She was on-time to our video visit and professional. I liked that this visit was able to be a video visit and I didn't have to go into the office during the pandemic. There is a lot of paperwork to fill out that comes from the office but that's to be expected.
