He has also worked as a staff psychologist at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center since March 2001, where he is assigned to the Spinal Cord Injury and Disease unit. His previous experience includes an Assistant Professorship of Psychiatry at the Medical College of Virginia. In that role, Dr. Ellwood provided assessments and treatment for geriatric, chronically ill, and pain patients and their families. Dr. Ellwood provides a full range of clinical psychological services, including psychological and neuropsychological evaluations in the Hanover office. His approach to therapy is cognitive behavioral and solution focused. He works with children (school age and up), adults, couples, families, and groups. He especially enjoys working with couples to resolve marital issues. Other areas of interest include pain management and coping with physical disabilities. Dr. Ellwood received his BA in Psychology from Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. He earned both his MS and PhD in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. He is also a Certified Forensic Evaluator for the state of Virginia.
