Dr. Mikala Herr was born in the United Kingdom and raised as a military child spending most of her childhood in the Sacramento area. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Cellular and Molecular Biology at CSU Chico and went on to graduate from Western University of Health Sciences with a Doctorate of Optometry in 2023. Before and during her undergraduate studies, she worked full-time as an ABO and NCLE-certified optician, lab technician, and work-up tech in various practice settings, gaining a well-rounded optometric experience spanning 10 years prior to attending WesternU. While attending optometry school, she was awarded the Practice Excellence scholarship for her various leadership roles and became a member of the Gold Key Optometric Honor Society. Dr. Herr has experience in a variety of settings, including externships at VA facilities with an emphasis on ocular diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, as well as performing high-risk medication monitoring for patients. Her experience includes vision rehabilitation, where she developed treatment plans and outlined activities for patients with various ocular and developmental deficiencies and traumatic brain injuries. Dr. Herr also served as an extern at an ophthalmology practice, where she learned about refractive, cataract, glaucoma, and eyelid procedures and the optometrist's role in supporting the ophthalmologist pre- and post-operatively. Additionally, she worked as a low vision optometrist and research coordinator on a medical device study helping late-stage macular degeneration patients. Her time in Southern California treating patients has made her proficient in Spanish, particularly in conducting Spanish-language exams, and she enjoys breaking down complex topics so patients from all backgrounds can better understand their eye health.
