“I had an appointment with Dr. Motaz Alshami and I am very grateful for his professionalism and attitude toward patients. He was attentive, compassionate, and genuinely interested in understanding my situation. Even though I do not speak English well, Dr. Alshami patiently communicated with me using Google Translate. I felt uncomfortable because it created extra inconvenience for him, but he never showed irritation and never asked me to come with an interpreter. Like a true doctor, he did not focus on the inconvenience. He stayed focused on my symptoms and showed a strong desire to understand my condition and help me despite the language barrier. He carefully listened to everything that was bothering me and prescribed treatment. I had been suffering for a long time, but even after the first visit, before starting the treatment, I already felt relief because someone finally listened to me and understood me. Thank you very much, Dr. Alshami. ”

Getting to know Dr. Motaz Alshami

I have been practicing psychiatry since 2015. I believe in the importance of combining psychotherapy with medications because of the benefits that can have, especially for cases that are deemed "treatment resistant". I am accepting new patients both in person and by telehealth. I am currently enrolled at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute. I offer psychoanalysis, which is an intense form of talk therapy that dives deep into the unconscious factors that can cause us continuing trouble in our lives. If you are interested in this kind of talk therapy, or have not had any long lasting benefit from previous talk therapy, contact me so we can discuss whether this would be an appropriate treatment for you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You can expect us to talk about what your expectations and fears about treatment are. I hope to establish a safe environment for you where you can feel comfortable telling me not only when things are good but also when things are not going the way you want them. Please note I only accept self-pay and I am unable to accept any patient on Medicare or Medicaid even if they choose to self-pay.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first few sessions are for us to get to know each other but I may suggest a specific treatment during the first few sessions based on my evaluation. I generally like for us to have an ongoing conversation about what works for you, what the evidence says and what is feasible for you to improve your mental health. My patients usually appreciate my openness with them and my involving them in the treatment from the start.
