Dr. Ruwani Gunawardane, MD

She specializes in Multiple sclerosis, headache and other complex neurological disorders. She has special training in neurosonology–the study of imaging tests crucial in interpreting and diagnosing cerebrovascular disease. Dr. Gunawardane was an assistant professor of neurology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine for seven years before going into private practice in 2006. She remains on the UM faculty as a visiting professor. Dr. Gunawardane earned her medical degree from St Georges University School of Medicine, Grenada, West Indies. She graduated in 1990 leading her class for clinical excellence and won the Chancellor Charles R. Modica award. She completed her residency in Internal medicine at Coney Island Hospital in New York, and then did her neurology training and a fellowship in cerebrovascular disease/stroke at the University of Maryland Medical Center. At the University of Maryland, she was one of the founding members of the Brain Attack team, a program designed to rapidly assess and treat stroke patient with a clot-dissolving drug in order to prevent death and disability. She has conducted a variety of stroke research studies and has co-authored an array of articles in professional journals. Dr.Gunawardane is a member of American Academy of Neurology.
