What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease of the brain and spinal cord that can, in severe cases, result in blindness and paralysis. MS occurs when a person’s own immune system begins to destroy its supply of myelin (the material that insulates cranial and spinal nerves) and replaces it with scar tissue. Symptoms may include numbness, walking/coordination problems, vision problems, pain, dizziness/vertigo, bowel/bladder dysfunction, and cognitive dysfunction.
