Dr. Abdul-Rasheed Muhammad, with a prestigious military past, was the first Muslim Chaplain in the US Armed Forces, endorsed by the Islamic Society of North America and confirmed at the Pentagon on December 3, 1993. He retired from the army in October 2012 and took up the mantle as the first full-time Muslim Chaplain with the US Department of Veterans Affairs. He was ISNA's endorsing agent for their chaplaincy program from 2013 to 2019. A well-known author, he was a significant contributor to "Diversity in Human Interaction: The Tapestry of America" (2004, Oxford Press) and even published an article in the Journal for Healthcare Chaplaincy. Part of his contribution encompassed working with the VA/DOD Integrated Mental Health Strategy leadership team, and contributing as a national strategic planner and trainer for the Army's suicide prevention program. His last military role was Command Chaplain, US Army Public Health Command. He is a Board-Certified Chaplain and a Mental Health Chaplain within the VA San Diego and Maryland Healthcare Systems. Currently, he offers consultation and treatment services for mental health, spiritual care, addiction, trauma, couples counseling, and bereavement. He is a Licensed Master Social Worker in Michigan and a Master Addictions Counselor with the NCC AP. Dr. Muhammad has delivered numerous presentations on the professions of chaplaincy and social work. On July 15, 2024, he earned his Doctorate in Social Work from Capella University for his capstone project “SOCIAL WORK AND CHAPLAINCY SERVICES: A TEAM APPROACH FOR IMPROVING PATIENT OUTCOMES." For the past five years, he has been the Resident Imam of Masjidul Taqwa, San Diego, CA.
