Getting to know Abigail Pruchnicki

Hi, I am Abi! I believe therapy is a commitment to healing and growth for the Mindbody and our experience in our social world. As your therapist, I will prioritize our therapeutic relationship as we work together to create a safe, comforting, non-judgmental environment. Through connection and exploration of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, we can find your individualized path to healing. My approach integrates the therapeutic modalities of Relational-Cultural, Psychodynamic, Humanistic, DBT, Narrative Therapy, and Mindfulness with a trauma-informed lens. I am adaptable in my approach according to the needs of my clients. Overall, I am a person who will listen, be understanding, and be accepting of all identities and experiences. I understand that starting therapy can be overwhelming but I believe that together, we can navigate challenges, learn, and move forward in your journey toward healing. I earned my Master's in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness at New York University. I also attended Providence College, where I obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology with a Minor in Women's and Gender Studies.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I, myself have been a new client and I understand how confusing and vulnerable it can feel to begin therapy with a new clinician. There can be discomfort including worry, fear, skepticism, or fatigue of the therapy process. Because I have been there, I want you to know that although the therapeutic experience can feel uncertain or messy, my goal is to be there with you with empathy and care as you face it with courage and compassion for yourself and your individual process. I do not necessarily have a step by step, clear cut process as a clinician because I believe in creating a foundation of self awareness and understanding that prepares you to be resilient and feel safe in the instability of life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My typical process begins by getting to know the individual’s story and experience. I view therapy as a safe and collaborative space where I encourage the client to express their authentic selves, thoughts and emotions. I utilize mindfulness, humor, challenging, and addressing feelings in the here and now in order to allow for deeper understanding and attending to trauma or grief wounds. With empathy, I work with them to guide themselves toward seeing themselves and their story in a new way that is more aligned with who they are and the energy and person they are striving to be.
