Getting to know Alexia Heurtelou

My name is Alexia Heurtelou, and I am a MHC-LP. I hold an MSEd in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from St. John's University. In my experiences thus far, I have worked with clients from ages 5 to 70. I currently work with children, adolescents, and young adults. I believe that everyone has a story, and no matter what they are currently facing, there is more to them and their life experiences. While using a person-centered approach, I do my best to help clients reach their treatment plan goals. I have experience working with clients diagnosed with Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, ASD, BPD, and Bipolar disorder. I strive to help each client navigate through their symptoms and understand their feelings and emotions. This is done by using different techniques such as CBT, motivational interviewing, play therapy, meditation, and music interventions. I also can provide faith-based interventions for those who follow Christianity.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a limited permit mental health counselor (MHC-LP) in the state of New York. I graduated from St. John's University with my M.S. Ed. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. As a therapist, I strive to ensure that all of my clients are comfortable, feel understood and are able to explore their feelings and thoughts in a non judgmental space. I use mindfulness techniques, cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, play therapy, meditation and music interventions.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My goal as a therapist is to overall help you as the client to increase your overall wellness and decrease symptoms towards your presenting problem. Together we will focus on ways to decrease stressors and triggers and incorporate ways to cope with challenging events and situations. We will work on treatment goals and individual/personal goals that arise while on this journey of healing and increasing overall wellness.

She puts a lot of thought into each session. She plans strategies and mechanisms to help achieve goals and follows up with them. Sessions are peaceful and productive.
My visit was very engaging and guided according to my pace. At times it was uncomfortable but the challenges was welcomed. At the onset my goals was clear and discussed with my input with the option to make any changes. One thing I hav learned is in Life one must be flexible and teachable to get to the Ultimate Goal, which is Complete Wellness. (Whatever that means to you in the stage of life you are in) My therapist helped me with different coping and grounding techniques.
Alexia is a great lister and cares deeply for her patients, she has great insight and offers different perspectives on important issues. She has a great deal of compassion and empathy which I think are essential to being a good therapist.
My overall experience was positive. I’ve learned alternative methods to cope. I felt heard and understood. She put in effort to make activities and things to do between sessions.
