Alison Panton, LPC

Psychotherapist
DC
I was born and raised in Jamaica, West Indies. I moved to the US for college and became a therapist over 20 years ago. My style is to listen and provide insight/feedback and follow the treatment plan you created for our sessions. I look forward to working with you. My approach My approach to therapy is active listening with therapy techniques of cognitive behavioral therapy, person-centered, strength-based, and solution-focused techniques implemented. My focus I believe I work best with individuals going through life transitions of death, new job, new love, loss of a child, etc. I have worked with individuals of all cultural backgrounds successfully, and I tend to work with teens and adults. As a proud Jamaican American, I believe in utilizing cultural sensitivity and being curious about all cultures in my approach. My communication style I believe it is important to have a kind and gentle approach and tone in working with any client. I use empathy and active listening as well as curiosity by asking clarifying questions to you as you seek solutions to what brought you to therapy. My journey to mental healthcare My journey to become a provider was a long one. It took me about 10 years to go to grad school part-time and get my licensure. I had a full-time job as a secretary and responsibilities, so going to grad school full-time and getting my counseling hours took some time. My goals for you I believe clients' goals can change and pivot, but the core goals created at the beginning of therapy usually remain for the duration of our therapeutic relationship. My first session with you The first session will be our intake session. We will look into what you want to achieve in your therapy sessions and create a treatment plan based on what you say.
