Getting to know Alyesha Alston

My name is Alyesha. I am a NY State (L/P) Mental Health Counselor. I earned my masters degree in Forensic Mental Health Counseling from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. My coursework and training has been centered on a dialectical behavioral approach, and includes therapeutic work with adults managing mood and personality disorders; family and relationship conflict; low self-esteem; depression; grief; anxiety; stress; trauma; and abuse. I have 5 years of experience with the NYC public school system where I have supported educators, parents, students and support staff as they undergo transitions within their education, career, and personal lives. A component of my cultural competency training included a 5 week study abroad trip to Mexico, where I advanced my spanish speaking skills. Prior to receiving my formal education in counseling, I worked as a mentor and tutor. I also volunteered for a crisis hotline center during my undergraduate studies. I use a person centered approach to therapy to ensure that my client’s individual needs and goals are addressed. As a clinician, my goal is for clients to become confident and independent.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Prior to receiving my formal education in counseling, I worked as a mentor and tutor. I also volunteered for a crisis hotline center during my undergraduate studies. What is your typical process for working with clients?

In the first session I will complete an intake assessment to gather as much information to better assess and get to know you, your history, and what concerns have brought you to therapy and therefore set up goals. The following sessions, we will engage in talk therapy while pulling from various modalities to help you achieve your goals. Our sessions are 45 min in length on a weekly basis. Please allow 15 minutes before the session to do the intake paperwork. I PROVIDE PSYCHOTHERAPY SERVICES ONLY; PLEASE NOTE I DON’T PROVIDE MEDICATION MANAGEMENT SERVICES.
