Getting to know Dr. Amanda Jones

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling and Human Development at the University of Rochester and a Mental Health Counselor - Limited Permit in New York and North Carolina. For more than eight years, I have worked in community mental health, correctional settings, rehabilitation services, private practice, and higher education, supporting individuals facing trauma, mental health concerns, and systemic barriers. While earning my PhD in Rehabilitation Counseling and Counselor Education from North Carolina A&T State University, I worked with individuals with developmental disabilities and others facing significant life challenges. These experiences strengthened my commitment to strengths-based counseling and helping individuals build meaningful lives despite adversity. My clinical experience includes working with incarcerated women, individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, and clients navigating racial trauma and chronic stress. I am particularly passionate about supporting Black individuals and families affected by racism and discrimination. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I founded Eunoia Holistic Counseling Services in North Carolina to support members of the Black community experiencing anxiety, grief, and emotional exhaustion amid both the pandemic and ongoing exposure to racial violence online. This work significantly shaped my clinical perspective and research interests. Today, my research focuses on the effects of racial trauma exposure through social media, particularly among Black adolescents and emerging adults. As a clinician, educator, mentor, and researcher, my goal is to help individuals feel supported, empowered, and capable of healing while navigating life's challenges.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a counselor, I strive to create a space where clients feel safe, supported, and empowered to be their authentic selves. I recognize that seeking counseling can be vulnerable, and I value the trust clients place in me. My approach is collaborative, viewing therapy as a partnership rather than a process of simply providing answers. You are the expert on your own life; my role is to help you explore challenges, identify strengths, develop new perspectives, and build the tools needed to reach your goals. My counseling style is warm, direct, and compassionate. I believe meaningful growth occurs when clients feel both supported and challenged. Throughout our work, I provide empathy and validation while helping you recognize patterns, beliefs, or behaviors that may be limiting your growth. I approach therapy through a strengths-based, holistic lens, focusing not only on symptoms but also on resilience, relationships, culture, identity, and overall well-being. I have experience working with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, racial stress, life transitions, relationship concerns, and co-occurring mental health challenges. I am especially passionate about supporting individuals who have experienced marginalization, discrimination, or systemic barriers. I recognize that social and cultural environments influence mental health and strive to ensure clients feel understood within the context of their lived experiences. Most importantly, I believe healing does not require perfection. Rather than focusing on "fixing" yourself, therapy can help you build self-awareness, strengthen coping skills, increase resilience, and create a life aligned with your values. Whether you are seeking support for a specific concern or greater self-understanding, I am committed to meeting you where you are and helping you move toward lasting growth and wellness.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My therapeutic process begins with understanding you as a whole person, not just the concerns that bring you to counseling. During our initial sessions, I learn about your background, relationships, strengths, challenges, cultural identities, life experiences, and goals. Together, we identify what matters most to you and develop a plan that reflects your unique needs and priorities. Once we have a clear understanding of your concerns, we work collaboratively to identify patterns, barriers, and opportunities for growth. Depending on your goals, therapy may involve exploring past experiences, processing emotions, strengthening coping skills, improving relationships, addressing unhelpful thought patterns, or managing stress and life transitions. I integrate evidence-based approaches while tailoring treatment to each individual's needs. Throughout the counseling process, I emphasize self-awareness, resilience, and practical application. Therapy is not only about understanding challenges but also learning how to navigate them more effectively. I encourage clients to reflect on insights gained in therapy and apply new skills in their daily lives. Meaningful progress often occurs through small changes that build over time. As our work continues, we regularly review your goals to ensure therapy remains aligned with what you hope to achieve. Some clients benefit from short-term support focused on a specific concern, while others engage in longer-term work addressing deeper patterns and experiences. Regardless of treatment length, I strive to create a supportive environment where clients feel empowered to take an active role in their growth. Ultimately, my goal is to help clients develop the confidence, skills, and self-understanding needed to navigate life's challenges with greater resilience and well-being. I hope clients leave therapy with a stronger sense of self, healthier coping strategies, and greater clarity, purpose, and confidence.
