Amanda Torres, LMHC

Amanda Torres, LMHC

Psychotherapist
NY
I work very well with individuals who have hit a wall in their therapy journey or who have not had success with other forms of therapy. I also love working with people who have great emotional intelligence and understanding of their trauma and challenges, but who have not been able to get to the next step of their healing. My clients have often told me that sessions with me are the first time they have really FELT their emotions and gotten out of their own heads.

Getting to know Amanda Torres

I work very well with individuals who have hit a wall in their therapy journey or who have not had success with other forms of therapy. I also love working with people who have great emotional intelligence and understanding of their trauma and challenges, but who have not been able to get to the next step of their healing. My clients have often told me that sessions with me are the first time they have really FELT their emotions and gotten out of their own heads.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I practice Chairwork Psychotherapy and Parts Work, which is an experiential therapy modality where we address suffering by giving voice and embodying our inner parts or selves, and engaging in imaginary dialogues with people or forces from our past, present, and future. This form of therapy is incredibly powerful and things can move quickly. I know how frustrating it is to have done all the work to analyze and piece apart your history, only to still feel stuck in pain and struggle. I don't believe in talking about things for years. I believe in facing and moving through them. If you are ready to move forward in your journey and do the hard work it takes to get there, let's get started.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My initial sessions are 90 minutes-- we will complete our intake and then based on your goals and concerns I will give you some suggestions for what we can work on in the session. We will get right to work! After the initial session, you will have a sense of what it is like to do Chairwork Psychotherapy and if it is a good fit for you. You will also leave the session having already made some progress or gained some clarity. You can expect to do Chairwork in every session. For ongoing sessions, we will generally begin with a brief check-in and then we will transition into the experiential work. Sessions end with a debrief of the work, reflection, and then any necessary recommendations for ongoing processing and self-care. My patients work very hard during their sessions with me! I focus more on the in-session work and less on assigning therapy homework. I believe in giving time and space for integration and healing to happen. Sometimes reading all the books, doing all the journaling, and listening to all the podcasts can overwhelm us. I believe in working deeply and intensely, and then allowing room to breathe and recover.
