My name is A.J. Esguerra. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and have been working in the mental health field since 2001. My first job in the field was following 9/11 in Arlington, Virginia for the Community Resilience Project. This FEMA funded endeavor helped provide education and mental health services for citizens following the tragic events at the Pentagon, NYC, and Pennsylvania. This was formative for my career identity as the project's focus was not only on the trauma of what happened, but about the idea of "resilience" and bouncing back. It continues to be a core principle for me to not just focus on the negatives of any situation, but to see any setback as an opportunity as well. Since that point, most of my service has been targeted towards children and adolescents. I have split my time primarily between working in residential treatment with abused and neglected children, and most recently in a private therapeutic day school for children and adolescents with special needs (which remains my full-time job). However, after COVID, I felt it was part of my purpose and mission to begin providing online therapy part time. My belief is that the world needs connection more than ever, and there are few things more protective or more resilient (back to that word again) than a positive relationship with another person. My therapeutic approach tends to be more eclectic in nature. In graduate school I received an MS degree in Counseling Psychology from Radford University. I was trained primarily in the use of Interpersonal psychotherapy. However, recently I have incorporated aspects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, positive psychology, solution-focused therapy, etc., into my practice. I have pursued special trainings in trauma focused care, mood disorders, attachment and play therapy. I believe that clients would describe me as supportive and a good listener. Creating a safe place for clients to be heard and witnessed is my first priority.
