Getting to know Amy Silverman

Please note that a 15-minute intake phone call is required prior to your first session. Are you looking for a therapist who understands the unique challenges inherent in family formation? Are you questioning how and whether to become parents? Are you in a foster or adoptive family and hope your therapist understands some of the issues specific to your situation? Are there missing pieces in your family history or have you learned new information via DNA testing? My practice is informed by my long-time focus on adoption. I focus on understanding your story, connecting with you, recognizing your strengths, and helping you determine how to tackle your challenges. I have a great love of teens and toddlers, and a great deal of compassion for their parents. In working with children, I utilize traditional play therapy, enhanced by Theraplay principles and techniques. I can help parents understand the impact of trauma or attachment difficulties and help strategize and practice the best response. At Spence-Chapin, we have a century of experience with family formation, exploring options, and exploring identity. We understand the impact of trauma, grief, and loss on children. We have worked with families and children from all racial, ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds. Our experience informs our practice. I hold a Master's in Social Work from Hunter College, City University of New York, which has further equipped me to support families through their unique journeys.
