Andrea Straker-Smith, MS

Psychotherapist
NY
I am a therapist who believes deeply in every person’s ability to heal, grow, and find purpose—especially during times of pain, transition or uncertainty. I am passionate about supporting individuals who find themselves at a crossroads, helping them reconnect with hope, resilience, and a renewed sense of direction. Over the years, I’ve come to understand that healing doesn’t happen in isolation—it happens through connection. My professional background is grounded in more than 20 years of experience across mental health, addiction treatment, and social service program administration. I have had the privilege of working with individuals and families navigating addiction, trauma, domestic violence, child welfare involvement, and poverty. These experiences have given me a deep understanding of the systems that impact people’s lives, as well as a profound respect for the resilience people carry—even when they may not yet recognize it in themselves.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to therapy is client-centered, compassionate, and tailored to each individual’s unique needs. I use an integrative framework that draws from multicultural counseling, CBT, DBT, MI, ACT, SFBT, and mindfulness. I work with adults and facing anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, addiction, life transitions, and relationship challenges. Above all, I prioritize building a genuine, trusting relationship where clients feel safe, understood, and free from judgment. My goal is to help each person gain insight, strengthen coping skills, and move toward the life they want to build.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In the first session I will complete an intake assessment to gather as much information to better assess and get to know you, your history, and what concerns have brought you to therapy and therefore set up goals. The following sessions, we will engage in talk therapy while pulling from various modalities to help you achieve your goals. Our sessions are 45 min in length on a weekly basis. Please allow 15 minutes before the session to do the intake paperwork. I PROVIDE PSYCHOTHERAPY SERVICES ONLY; PLEASE NOTE I DON’T PROVIDE MEDICATION MANAGEMENT SERVICES.
