Anna Reyes, LCSW

Psychotherapist
960 Manhattan Avenue, 4th Floor Office 3, Brooklyn, NY
I work with queer and BIPOC adults who are tired of "performing" competence while feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or disconnected underneath. You may be highly capable, driven, and successful, yet still rely on shape-shifting, self-abandonment, or over-functioning in ways that once helped you survive. Now those patterns are creating strain in your body, your relationships, and your daily life. You want a deeper kind of healing—one that helps you feel more clear, grounded, more honest, and more authentically yourself. I work somatically and relationally — meaning we use what happens in your body, and between us in the room, as the primary data. I'll guide you in relearning your inner cues, making sense of old survival strategies, and reconnecting to the part of you that already knows how to stay grounded, courageous and clear about who you are and what matters. I'm a bisexual, Latiné, biracial woman, former professional dancer, and licensed therapist (licensed clinical social worker, to be exact!). Both as a dancer and as a person, I've spent years learning the difference between performing for survival and moving from inner truth. That distinction is the foundation of everything I do in the therapy room.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I'm primarily a somatic and relational therapist. Here's what that means for you: Somatic therapy invites you to explore, experience and celebrate your emotional life. Our bodies hold non-verbal maps – of who we are, of how others have (or haven't) met our needs and of how the world works.
These maps form beneath our conscious awareness, at the nervous system level, long before our thinking minds get involved. Somatic Therapy helps you identify which of those maps need updating, so you can not only understand yourself more clearly
but actually feel clearer, lighter and more resilient. Relational therapy uses the dynamic between you and me as data. As a relational therapist, I track not only your story, but also how you share it, what you say (and don’t say), and what your presence evokes in me. And when it's clinically right, I'll name my experience — when your pain moves me, when your growth delights me. This gives your system a chance to relearn what it feels like to be truly seen, not just valued for what you can do. Being a relational therapist also means checking in on how you're experiencing me — which gives us rich, alive material to explore your relational patterns and tendencies. When we work with our dynamic together, therapy becomes alive, connected and deeply affirming.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

As we begin to build trust, I'll guide you in slowing down and tuning into your inner world: how your emotions show up in your body, what it's like to let yourself fully experience them and what it means to be genuinely witnessed in what's happening inside you. As we go deeper, we'll work together to decode what those emotions are communicating and how to respond without drowning in them nor shutting them out. Over time, you'll also encounter the unexpected. Our bodies hold stories that can contradict the ones our minds have always told — and reaching those deeper layers is where profound healing lives. Through sustained work, you'll develop a richer, more legible sense of who you are, what you need, and how your body communicates that to you.
