Getting to know Anne Sandefur

I am a New York-based psychotherapist working with adult individuals. I have experience working with clients navigating a range of issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, low self-worth, relationship issues, fertility, sexual/intimacy concerns, identity development, life transitions, and early adulthood issues. My approach in session is proactive, engaged, and pragmatic. I draw from my training in humanistic, cognitive behavioral, trauma-informed, multiculturally competent, and strength-based methodologies. I hold a B.A. in Psychology from Duke University, a J.D. from Charleston School of Law, and an M.A. and Ed.M. in Counseling Psychology from Columbia University. It was during my time mediating civil conflicts that I decided to move into the field of mental health counseling to garner a deeper relationship with my clients and more intimately help them move towards their goals and a sense of well-being. I also had a career as a professional ballet dancer.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I seek to create an engaging, collaborative, and warm therapeutic environment as a means of providing a safe space to explore and bring about meaningful change in my clients' lives. I believe that the therapeutic alliance (therapist-client relationship) is at the heart of successful therapy and built on respect, empathy, lack of judgment, and openness.

Excellent! Caring, knowledgeable!
Anne came highly recommended to me by a colleague, and I have nothing but great things to say as well. Anne always makes our visits a safe space to express what I am going through. Not ever dismissive and is gentle in her approach when trying to expand one's perspective. Attentive, a great listener and has such great insights into the situations and feelings we discuss. She helps me reflect on the deeper currents that are under the surface reactions and feelings which helps me actually process. Highly recommed.
Anne is a wonderful therapist. She is professional, thoughtful and easy to talk to. I have worked with her for several months and have had a great experience.
Anne is absolutely fantastic! She listens to me with empathy, calmness and compassion. It is very hard to find a therapist who can actually offer concrete advice and listens to what I am saying. With Anne, she breaks down my thought processes so I do not spiral and gives me small goals that I can easily accomplish. I feel like I have done a complete 180 in my mindset since working with her. My only regret is that I did not find her sooner!
Anne is an excellent listener, she is warm and empathetic. I came in pretty nervous but she made me feel safe and at ease. Highly recommend!
I am so glad I started seeing Anne. She’s helped me see and work through some issues I have been dealing with for a long time. Our conversations are engaging and I always feel comfortable talking to her.
I really enjoy them and find my visits to be helpful. Anne's style of listening provides a comfortable environment that makes sharing easy. Most of the time I feel like we are just having a conversation, which she lets me lead, allowing for the development of self awareness.
Anne is a consummate professional and creates a warm, open space to constructively work on issues. I would highly recommend her to anyone working through a difficult time.
Anne and I have worked together for about a year and our work has been critically helpful towards accomplishing my mental health goals. We have worked through numerous key focal areas in my life and have effectuated tangible change as a result. I’m very grateful and highly recommend Anne!
