Getting to know Annsley March

As a clinician with a Master's in Social Work from Hunter College, City University of New York, I strive to be intelligent and warm, but also direct. I won't hide behind an anonymous exterior. My sessions are frequently punctuated by wit, insight, and spontaneity. I try to be as authentic as possible while still creating a space where you can feel understood and accepted.

What should a new client know about working with you?

The first and most important aspect to successful therapy is whether we connect with each other. It may not happen in the first session, but a good fit is vital for therapy to work. I always advise new patients to really tune into how it feels to be in session with me, with any therapist they're considering. I will often check in with you about how you are feeling about our work—what is helping and what is not? When do you feel comfortable with me, when do you feel like we are missing each other's cues? We are aiming for "safe but not too safe." This should be a relationship that must build towards trust, can withstand ruptures, and invites challenge.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I believe weekly sessions that occur at an agreed-upon time and date, ideally the same every week, are very important for therapeutic success, at least in the early stages. In our initial session we will be establishing our connection, getting a feel for each other's relational style, and understanding the goals we are hoping to address in treatment. Then I like to administer an intake in the second or third session in which I will ask you questions about your background, most important relationships, defining moments, psychiatric history, medical history, and so on. This is so I can get a general understanding of where you have been before we met. After the intake, we are in the process of relationship-building, discovering patterns in which you may be stuck, understanding your core strengths, and discovering the resources at your disposal that you will need to tap into in order to grow as a person. Therapy can be short-term and goal-oriented, or open-ended and emergent, or somewhere in between. It's a creative process of self-discovery.
