I’m Anthony Windram, an LMSW and psychotherapist at Transcendent Self Therapy. I believe the stories we tell about ourselves help us make sense of who we are and give meaning to our lives. For me, therapy is a space where those stories can be explored with compassion and curiosity, and where we can look beneath an immediate difficulty to understand the deeper patterns shaping it. People seek therapy for many reasons. Some are experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or emotional distress. Others are navigating a significant transition: changing careers, confronting burnout, entering a new stage of life, or questioning whether the life they have built still reflects who they are. They may appear capable and successful while privately feeling stuck, dissatisfied, or uncertain about what should come next. My approach is interpersonal and psychodynamic. A line from Kierkegaard that resonates with me is: “Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.” Together, we can explore how past experiences and relationships continue to shape the present—and develop greater freedom in how you move forward. Before becoming a therapist, I studied English literature at the University of Cambridge and spent many years working in advertising and marketing. My own experience of changing careers has given me a particular interest in work, identity, ambition, burnout, and reinvention. I understand that a professional transition is rarely only about choosing what to do next; it can bring deeper questions about purpose, self-worth, and the person you want to become. Originally from England and now living in New York, I bring personal as well as professional experience of navigating change. I offer a thoughtful, collaborative space where you can speak freely, examine your experiences in depth, and arrive at a fuller understanding of yourself.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You do not need to arrive knowing exactly what to say or having a clear explanation for how you feel. We can begin with whatever is most present for you and develop an understanding together. I am warm, curious, and engaged, and I believe therapy works best as a genuine collaboration. I will listen carefully not only to what you say, but also to the patterns, contradictions, and underlying feelings that emerge over time. I am interested in helping you find relief while also going deeper—toward a fuller understanding of yourself and greater freedom in how you live.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first sessions will focus on what brings you to therapy, what you hope might change, and the experiences that have shaped you. There is no expectation that you tell your whole story immediately; we will move at a pace that feels manageable. As our work develops, we will pay attention both to present difficulties and to recurring patterns in your relationships, work, and sense of self. Rather than following a fixed formula, I adapt the therapy to the individual. We will regularly reflect on what we are discovering, how the work feels, and whether it is helping you move toward the life you want.
